and other low grade hogs will if continued seriously hinder the fulfilment ol the canadian bacon contract stated w p watson assistant director of the on tarlo livestock branch at the annual meeting or the halton livestock jm proverpent association held in milton on saturday afternoon of last week mx watson appealed to the audience to make sure their hogs were in the 200 lb live weight category before shipping them to market this would assure better prices and aid the gov ernment in filling the stupendous 600 000 000 pound order for high class ba con for britain mr watson pointed out that every time an under weight hog is sold by the farmer he loses the ontario gov- erwient subsidy of 1 00 per carcass for a grade a hog and 50 cents on a bl an underweight carcass in the class called lights is subject to a 260 discount a light hog weighing 150 to 170 lbs can be finished up to 200 lbs and bring the owner 5 00 profit on the transaction extra feed should not cost more than an additional 3 00 i and the selling price could be increas ed b 00 it was further pointed out that 1534 light weight hogs were sent to market here last month that might just as well have been ted up to the 200 lb mark out of every 10 hogs marketed 8 will have to be exported if we are to fill our contract to bri- tain stated mr watson he further pointed out that the quality of the bacon we export now will largely de termine our market in the post war period a sound film in technicolor entitled bacon for britain was delayed through the courtesy of the federal department this depicted the vari ous tep3 in the processing of bacon from the time it leaves the farmers yard until it reaches seaboard the election of officers resulted as follows president edwin harrop 1st vicepresident george gordon mall expecting a re mittance that is due us to receive only the annual tax bill somehow we never have a real hearty reception for the tax bill no doubt if we count ed it all up we would find that we have paid out during the year far more money in hidden taxes that has been added on to the cost of the varl- pus articles than we have been in the haibit otf buying than the amount of the annual tax bill just because those hidden taxes were included in the price of the article purchased we never thought of them as taxes but the annual tax bill looks different and we are apt to wonder what it is we are paying for if we could get our share of good roads police protection education and all the other items thai taxes pay for wrapped up in a neat pa peel perhaps covered with cellophane and have that parcel handed to us when we paj our taxes we might look at it differently but because of the fact that all we get back is our receipted tax bill we are apt to be grudge paying the taxes usually though we get good value for the amount expended by the municipality in which we live because of the size of the municipality it would be diffi cult for those in authority to waste ery much money without causing one big noller from the taxpayers with governments though it is different they are far away and it would be difficult to check up on them per haps in this year of 1941 it might be a good t idea to pay our annual taxes with a smile thankfu that we are not being taxed as are so many of those occupied countries over in europe that we are reading so much about these days v v v with spring like weather still on the bill of fare it seems difficult lo realize that christmas is a mere troo weeks away we associate cold weather and snow with christmas but so far this fall we have had scarcely an of either santa often distributes slughi skates skis and toboggans at christmas but with mild weather these articles might not be appreciated this season this modern idea of giving so many present seems away over done uiywa we aon t think that the gifts arc appreciated as they were when we fttrt lucky to get even one gift at christmas the modern idea of so many gilts tends to make the receiver ol these gifts selfish and to listen to one youngster telling another that they got twenty four gifts compared to the others sen en teen doesnt sound so good we still like to get a letter at christmas from some old friend thav we haven t heard from for sometime better than any other christmas gift v v although the new price control system has scarcely been in force long enough to notice its effect up on trade et we see where it has been criticized as was to be expected one large city retail establishment is quot ed as stating that of the many artic les that they retail only seven or eight had to be reduced in price when the nen regulations came into effect at that rate retailers losses should be very small another paper takes ra ther a gloomy view of the new regu lations and it claims that more and more retailers will be forced to close up because of this latest control of prices it goes on to state that eighty per cent of the retailers across the dominion scarcely make a living and that only one in ten survive ten years we don t think that this gloomy opinion is warranted in fact we would think that this idea of price control ought to save a good many headaches when the war is over that is compared to the situation after- the last war it wasnt difficult to drop several hundred dollars in a day due to tumbling prices at that time sugar today is less than 800 per hundred pounds at the close of the last war it was around 25 00 per bag and tt was only one article that provided a swift easy way to lose money an other advantage of price control as we see it would be that it does away with the temptation to hoard if the price of all articles that we are in the habit of buying is to remain pegged at todays price there is no need of lay ing in a huge supply for the future against a higher price we are of the opinion that price control as being practiced today should work out to advantage to retailer and consumer alike due to war conditions work is more plentiful across the dominion and as a result money is more plenti ful and business is improved in almost all lines of trade during- times like these there is the tendency to think that good times are at last a perman ent state and that they will last for ever it doesn t always work out that way and it might be a good idea for us to save as much as possible while times are better one good way to do this is by the continued purchase of war saving certificates they can be pur chased for as little as four dollars at time and up to eighty dollars and vou are allowed to purchase six of those eighty dollar certificates each vear the four dollar certificate re turns you five dollars at the end of seven and one half years and the eighty dollar ones returns you an even one hundred dollars in the same time looks like a good investment with no reactors everything must be sold as mr sham is out of feed tkttmti oash the new mystery thriller serial novel in the american weekly with the detroit
