the georgetown herald wednesday evening january 14th 1942 the editors corner christmas cards this year as usual we received many christmas carets from friends far and near many of thrtn were novel ones just a ixttte out of the ordinary which will be rememhered longer than the more conventional greeting card not that all of them arent appreciated because we beheve that it is not what a christmas card aavs thai counts to much as the fact that a friend who is perhaps far awa in another town remembers you at omitmas ume and take the tioubce to address a card and drop it tn the maj mr and mrs cecil davtdion who ore pait mas ters in the art of designing their own card sent a most entertaining card this yrar seated at a desk covered with books papers and what have you they were pic tured in thr deepest perpleitly while undrrnrath was printed the message trying to find a new way of with rng you a merry christmas newlywedi mr and mrs gordon martin com bined their first christmas card with some excellent photograph with a window pane as backiiround a holly wreath in silhouette enclosrd thr profile of thr couple also in silhourtte with thr wording our first merry christmas to you from rye douglas son in law of the late pub lnhrr of thr herald came a card brarina picture of the nabco manganese mining co in which hr has an interest showing a houp of employees standing in front of one of the buildings many cards this year drpartrd from thr mrrr christmas happy new year moif to remind one that this is not thr happirst rrn that thr world has srrn thus from wnltrr r lrggr of granby qurlxc prrsi dent of the canadian weekly ewspaprrn association a card with it picture of a horse and cow yolkrd to belher with two men one in city clothes holding thr reins another in work clothing steering a plow in these unusuul timrs there is a rrratcr nrrd than ever for us oil to pull togelhrr was thr w mr lrrr r pressed his seasons greetings to fellow nirmlxm in thr association f l applrford of applrfoid paper products hamilton linked his new years grrrting with a reference to priorities of which the present bum ness world is hearing so much in thrse days when probably we may differ in our opinions of what things should hae priorities or what things are essential we can agree on this on one day in the year a leant we take time off to verbally express to our friends our sincere wishes that christmas may bring you your de sire and the new year all that you think is essential tanks to mr churchill was the caption on a picture of a train load of tanks leaving thr angus shops of the canadian pacific railway for service aervice where theyre most needed were not say ing much about a merry christmas this year said harry smith manager of the c p r press bureau but we do hope itll be happy in the knowledge of a good job done by one and all towards bring peuce on eearth back again and may the new year see it on its way florence elliott a college acquaintance now employed with the fort erie timesreviewl used a quotation from winston churchill on her cord for the morning will come brightly will it shine on the brave and true kindly on all who suffer for the cause gloriously upon the tombs of heroes thus will shine the dawn an unusual card from m et mme j renouf of troispistoles quebec illustrated the frenchcanadian love of colour in pastel pink blue and yellow hand- lettering in gold proclaimed a bonne heureuse annee et joyeux noel we were pleased to receive a number of cards from those on active service an embossed blue air force flag with insignia in blue and gold was a colour ful greeting from pilot officer ian mackenzic at hagersville another blue and gold air force card came from lac leslie clark at guelph while cpl harold marshalls card from ottawa had the canadian postal corps crest on the cover a card from pte john car- michael stationed at camp borden with the rcasc had an etching of the army service corps 1914 show ing a heavy ammunition carrier drawn by a fourhorse team from overseas came a note from pte ed hick- en saying thanks a million for the paper it sure takes a fellow back home calendars as the years go by we note a change in the calendars which were always the first herald of a new year while many business firms have dropped them altogether others are limiting them in size and elabor ate illustrations one that is always looked forward to at the herald office however is that from united paper mills which specializes in extremely attractive young ladies maybe its just coincidence but we al ways seem to have an unusually large number of visit ors who drop into the office on one pretext or another the first part of the new year and let their eyes wander to the wall above the editors desk where the united paper mills calendar holds the spotlight this year the calendar features a damsel in fish ing garb whose fishing line has but we wont spoil it for those who havent made their yearly excursion well be
