the georgetown herald wednesday july lt 1942 the editors corner the men in khaki yes thu week is unique its canadas army week and is being held across the dominion from june 29th to july 5th inclusive and therefore leads a special significance to dominion day this year as canadians give thanks to the fathers of confedera tion on july 1st they will also give praise to the young men who defend the principles of confedera tion against the forces of dictatorship unfortunately there can be no equality of aerifices during wartime the man who steps into a uniform gives up his entire personal life and if he is killed fighting for democracy he has made a sacrifice which no other can equal we who remain home muit never forget that we can be proud of our army collectively as well as individually for it ranks among the three highest paid armies in the world it is the best clothed and fights with the finest equipment the army has been suffering from an inferi ority complex majorceneral c f constantine re minded the toronto army week civilian organization committee this week perhaps they havent had the bright uniforms perhaps the opportunity for battle bas not yet arisen but its coming i do not wish to detract from the air force or navy but it is the army marching on its two feet who will eventually win this war and finish it this time l countrywide celebration during army week army camps are being opened to the public so that they may see canadian soldiers training with automatic weapons and other canadianmade equipment and will also be riven an opportunity to watch that integral part of every fight ing mons training army games we will be able to visit canadian army technical schools and see the men actuolly working at their machines typical army menus arc being publicized so that canadian housewives may see for themselves how nourishing and appetizing a soldiers meal an be citizens arc being urged to fly the union juck both at their homes and at their places of business in honouring the bovs in khaki we mustnt overlook a very importont factor conclusive to their feippiness their nextofkin there arc lots of child ren in your neighbourhood wligsc daddies are in battle dress it must be with lonring eyes that they wutch the children of civilian fathers pile into the family car for a days outing in the country- dont forgct these tittle children there ore lonesome mothers too pay them n visit or drop a card what georgetown is doing in georgetown we havent forgotten our sol der boys our legion and legion wa lome scots wa and soldiers comforts committee have seen to that lets get right behind these organizations and support them even better than wc have in the pist on tuesday june 30th the local unit no i 3 platoon lome scots regiment and brass band will parade through town thurtday friday and saturday c company of the lome scots are uponsoring the pic ture captain of the cloudb at the gregory theatre there is the dance in the armouries friday night july 3 and on sunday july 5 c company 2nd battalion lome scots will hold n church parade in acton paging all students vacation time is here schools have closed their doors till the fall term and in normal times thoughts turned to long summer days spent swimming playing tennis sun bathing at the cottage and so on but this summer is not a normal one there is a tension in the air which only wartime brings every boy and girl old enough to realize the serious ness of the time through which we arc passing must feel the urge to be out and doing his or her share there are innumerable ways in which students can spend the vacation weeks which will be to their own advantage and to the advantage of their country one way to help which has lots of appeal to boys and girls who like outdoor life and which would include a change of environment is working for the man who feeds the army the farmer the labour shortage created by the war has left many of them in desperate need of help why not make inquiries of local farmers and find out just what you can do then of course essential war industries are appealing for workers too even if it is only for the summer mon ths their high rate of pay would make an appreci able difference to the thickness of any student s poc ketbook with the advent of the fall term for those who must or prefer to remain at borne we have john to be done here too girls get in touch with the red cross youll be surprised at the number of ways in which you can help boys there is an urgent need of volunteers for the collection smd sorting of salvage be salvage conscious this fllimmer and moke your efforts in this connection a valuable contribution to the cause then too an other way in which you can be of service this sum mer and earn your spending money at the same time is to give a helping hand to the women whose men are in the service there are countless odd jobs entailed in keeping a home looking nice and in good repair which they un unable to do themselves you 11 find the per forming of your own particular iob will be a source f satisfaction both to you and to your country red cjross news tfiz ntus to br a dune u to walk u god aitxig uv path
