and economical in some ways it may be said that war act a a purge by eliminating the un necessary parts ot our lives and thereby leaving room for more vital and hardier growth afterwards war brinsra out the beat and v orst in men it seems too bad that our human nature is such that it takes a tragedy like war to make us realize how many changes should be made in our way of living but it it nevertheless a universally accepted fact that auch has always been the case already we can see changes in our social system developing true they are not as marked yet as those which have taken place in england where the old school tie system has become practically obsolete but the ligns of change are there the political situation in canada today needs no comment it speaks for itself no prophet is needed to see that a great many changes are imminent we are all only too familiar with the way in which war haa affected the economic phase of our lives taxes war savings and bonds have pared the average income down to the bone difficulties in transporta tion of raw materials and shortage of labour have al ready made us realize just how many frills we can do without if we really have to the human mind is a wonderful thing and speaking of doing without brings us back to the old saying that necessity is the mother of invention war taxes the ingenuity of a nation and we on this continent are not lacking in this quality rubber shortage solved one of the urgent problems facing every car owner has been the tire shortage the busy minds of scientists have not been idle and now it has been an nounced that canadas peacetime rubber requirements are likely to be supplied from the synthetic rubber de velopment now under way two processes will be used to manufacture a total of about 40000 tons a year already a large government plant is under construction at samia they will use as a base for the product al cohol produced from grain by existing distilleries just in passing it seems to us that this will give the govern ment a chance to put a much needed curb on the liquor output and input of the country paper cans in order to conserve tin and iron for war uses the american can co americas no i tin can manu facturer got ready last week to product a fibre can they can be made by the same machinery that makes tin cans and are cheaper than glass containers which cost more than tin cans but there is a definite draw back to them the chief material used in the fibre is paper so that they are suitable in the main for dry pro ducts and since they cannot be used for processed foods which must be hermetically sealed canmakers say that after the war tin will come again into its own food poxs and powders personally we do not relish the prospect of having our diet eventually reduced to a pill or powder form to be taken daily with water at meal times far fetched as that statement is we were amazed to read of the strides made in the science of dehydrating foods it has come as a result of wartime demands to save vital shipping space and the necessity of providing concen trated foods for paratroop and commando units which must be entirely selfsufficient when in action on the average one pound of fully dehydrated food is the equivalent of fifteen pounds of the same product in its original form thirty dozens eggs in the shell occupy 2 4 cubic feet dried they take up only slightly more than vz a cubic foot meat dairy pro ducts eggs and vegetables are all convertible and we were most intersted to read of the methods used in some instances types of dehydrated vegetables most in demand are potatoes onions cabbages carrots beets and to- umtoetv they ore first carefully cleaned and cut into mall pieces shreds or flakes these are then blanch- x in steam or boiling water and placed in the drier amount of moisture which should be left varies fbe particular vegetable one company has speci- ljiittherodiietion of potato shreds which permit pmpararjoa of mashed potatoes in drum and when drying is completed looks something like coloured crrpe paper this filmy layer is broken into small fragments for packing and storage the handling of milk and eggs which are very liquid in their original form requires a different process after testing and preliminary sterilization the liquid is sprayed into a drying chamber where hot air in constant motion reduces it to a powder which falls to the floor dehydrated foods have not yet come into gen eral wartime use however the future of this develop ment would appear to depend upon the assurance of quality as the convenience of such products is undeni able our fields are green the nervous strain imposed on everyone by the war demands a release and during the summer months that necessary relaxation should not be hard to find sports to suit the inclination of almost everyone can be foundright here in our own town they are a grand way to throw off for a while the daily cares which some times get the best of us down we have bowling tennis and many of the nice level lawns weve noted around town could be easily marked oil for badminton if so desired if your tastes do not run in quite such strenuous directions there are good fishing streams within hiking distance even a short walk in almost any direction from town you with to take will lead you to a nice place where you can sit down and enjoy the scenery and a couple of sandwiches these days of restricted travel will make many of us realize our own town and vicinity holds just as many attractions as did distant fields in prewar days rental information available it is now possible for every person renting any type of accommodation for one month or more to find out the maximum rental and what services are provid ed by the landlord this was announced july 10 by wishart f spence regional rentals administration officer under board order 108 the landlord must give the tenant a signed statement on a form provided by the rentals administration and known as rc40 and for ward a copy to the nearest regional rentals office within ten days whenever a new lease or a renewal of a lease for any commercial or housing accommodation is made involving a change in tenant a change in rental a change in the services or accommodation supplied by the landlord or for premises which have been untenant ed for some time the form must be filled in whether the lease is written or oral but it is not required from landlords of boarding or lodging houses where there are three or more guests in addition to the ctperators family or by landlords renting for less than one month special pro vision is made for them under another section of order 108 form rc40 lists not only the maximum rental on the basic date but also gives a statement of services which were supplied at that time and those being given under the lease in this way the public is given protection against an illegal advance in rent by reason of a cut in the ser vices provided i have been impressed said mr spence with the fact that although most real estate men are aware of these regulations and take every precaution to com ply with them citizens who are not in the real estate business yet who make rentals occasionally either have not informed themselves of the regulations or have carelessly ignored them this cannot be tolerated and i must state reluctantly that stern measures will be tak en when the administration finds there has been fai lure to comply with these regulations forma may be obtained from the regional ren tals office 330 bay street toronto if you are not a regular
