auociauoo and the oslarloqurtwc divnioc ol tfce cwua rite editors corner autumn we like autumn to many people it it a season symbolic of sadness and decay but there another way of looking at it too we love the clear cool sunlight and the crifp air the sense of fulfillment the completion of nature cycle of season toward producing a harvest 4f all the earths good thing were not ashamed to admit maybe that part of the secret of autumn fascination for u it make our mouth water even to think of all the fruit which are in abundance right now firm red apple luscious peache plum pear there are ripe tfcmatoes in our garden and we arent forgetting the milkaweet good- tttu of comonthecob almost any day you walk down the street you can smell delicious spicy smells coming from many a kitchen it canning season and house wives are preserving all these good thinas to satufy hungry appetite during the winter months ahead this year more than any other they are being urged to do down fruits and vegetables were lucky there in canada to hove such abundance and to let it rot on the ground i a real sin high school girls yes and boys too who arent working could take advantage of these extra holidays and help mother do more preserv ing than she ever has before its really a job for two people anyway and besides making it easier for mother youll be doing your bit to conserve the nations crop just as much a if you were actually out in an orchard picking fruit for a canning factory they need it too i the word freezing with regard to new gov ernment regulations dealing with manpower has been used so extensively it has resulted in u great deal of con fusion both among employers and employees we have been reading about the hundreds of people who left their old jobs sept i and were waiting in huge lineups in front of the new government unemployment offices in toronto these people were all afraid that they would lie unable to change jobs after sept i because the new government ruling would freeze them to their existing jobs the regulations provide that no employer may dismiss any employee and no employee may quit any job wthout giving seven days notice in writing but there is nothing in the regudations to indicate that any one would be refused permission to change to another job persuasion may be used in some cases and some people might be asked to switch to other jobs which they had not planned raking owing to wartime exigencies violations of the regulations will make offenders liable to heavy penalties after sept 14 firm names will disappear from help wanted advertisements henceforth firms must fill all their employment needs through employment office to make this plan effective help wanted and situation wanted ads can only be placed in newspapers through the employment office we can appreciate the job our government has on its hands trying to regulate the affairs of a coun try at war so that everything will remain as nearly nor mal as possible we know there arc many things they are bound to leave out of consideration but until these things are brought to their attention they will throw all the other careful planning and regulating out of balance exceptions to the rule include scientific nnd techni cal personnel registered nurses or probationer under going training ministers teachers in schools colleges otuniveraities which are not operated for rain nnd female domestic servants in homes employing not more than one servant employer vs employee just at the moment there is one recently passed regulation the costofliving bonus which is receiving some criticism on a certain score and we think the criticism levied is certainly justified the government has entirely ignored the fact that the cost of living for soldiers dependents has risen just as much as it has risen for other people there is a large percentage of soldiers families who are entirely dependent upon their soldiers allow ance they are mostly families with small children to feed and clothe we cannot understand why their needs sshould not receive the first consideration of the govern ment for a reason which speaks for itself to date we have heard of no adjustment being made but hope the wety near future will see this important oversight reme- twl after all who are more deserving of a cost-of- fiving bonusthan the families whose men are fighting for
