nomination meeting friday night showed ty the enthusiastic discussion and nominations that georgetown citizens have a healthy interest in the af fair of the community before the meeting was held there was a feeling prevalent that to hold an election in wartime was an unnecessary expense and one that should be avoided but to permit tlie same persons to continue in office without interruption or opposition would result in carelessness and arising from that great er expense to the taxpayers in the long run we are not expressing any criticism of present municipal office holders but we do consider it a matter of mutual interest that an annual stocktaking as it were should be conducted and if the citizens have any criticisms and changes to suggest thats the time to come forth and voice them at nomination meeting last friday thats just what happened and thr town awaits with interest the results of the election on monday de cember 7th every citizen whose nnme appears in parts one or two of their particular word as set down in tl voters lists 1942 should make a point to get out and vote on december 7th a more hotly contested elec tion has not been held in town for many u year with the offices of mayor reeve nnd councillors open for elec tion it is your duty to see that the riht men uic put ot the helm your vote will accomplish this end it speaks for itself the past few weeks weve been asking for don ations to the christmas cheer for british children fund this week we are going to let you lead a piece written by mrs gordon brown who saw firsthand the little homes of england the little homes of england lie smouldering in their dust no need to cry for vengeance from a god both kind and just gaunt frames point up to heaven that once knew joy and mirth till the cruel hand that felled them tore and crushed them to the earth far up upon an inside wall a tiny bookshelf stands its contents neatly set in rows awaiting loving hands hands that will never feel again along their pages bright hands that now gently folded lie upon a coverlet whice and here a little spot of blue upon a blackened wall a tiny jug still bravely clings awaiting teatime call but desolation spreads her wings where cheer was wontto be only the acrid smell of smoke ashes and misery gone all the little useless things that go to make a home just little bits from here and there from those who love to roam a broken picture hangs awry above the empty hearth a sunny picture of blue skies and luscious green of earth these little things in ruined homes mute testimony of woe stab at the heart in such a way as nothing else could do and little homes of england lie open to the skies may god in his great mercy help us again to rise aileen burr brown a good idea we think ottawa is to be congratulated on the idea of establishing local ration boards throughout the coun try to deal with rationing problems as they arise in each particular locality we have had a board of men in ottawa who are fam iliar only with conditions in that part of the dominion making suggestions and passing laws which affect every man woman and child in the country when laws aff- cce our daily lives to such an extent we think it a wise move on their part to see that they or their representat ive actually have some contact with the people such a fwoeedure to the essence of democracy in that way the ideas criticisms and problems of the public are made if j known mucn nre cleanly and forcibly to t present thaw j if oftentimes ttosvher is rnn t j the regulations about coupons their validity when they are obsolete special dispe etc wttjch under the former system of communicating direct with ottawa took a long time to straighten out merchants will find the local ration boards a boon for often customers pla ced them ir iwkward positions by insisting a new ruling had given i i the right to purchase a certain commodi ty it wa e of either losing a sale and maybe a cus tomer or a delay of a week of fwo until the inquiry had been answered after the naw local board is set up those difficulties will be eliminated to a great extent there are many thousands of people in canada who dont follow the newspapers and consequently canl understand why tea and coffee are hard to get they dont know about or dont connect enemy submarine action with rationed sugar it will be the duty of the local ration board to explain the whys and wherefores of new rulings to such people we in canada are eager to win the war to win it we must have cooperation and to have cooperation we must have understanding local ration boards know the people with whom they are dealing and can talk to them so aie a decided step in the right direction board members will act without remuneration and at they well know it will involve a lot of work and worry there may be- some people who will try to take advantage of them and then too some particularly diffi cult case might arise in both instances tney have the satisfaction of knowing they hnvr the local district board the regional board and ottawa to whom they con refer watch them with the onslauoht of chill winds and the corning of wintrr our thoughts automatically tttrn to christmas there ure only nineteen shopping days left to prepare for that great day this year with gas and rubber rutioning there is more reason than ever for you to buy nt home your own mrrchants have as fine n stock at reasonable prices as you will find in any city store this week ond the coming weeks the pages of the herald will tell you what they have to offer watch the adsl
