for the 97th year we can see nothing unpatriotic in holding a rural fair in wartime and we know there are plenty who agree with us gas rationing will not affect the attendance few farmer in this district have to come to towa to do their weekend shopping anyway and the dates have been conveniently set on friday and saturday september 10th and i llh fair day u a lime when folk from the surrounding district gather to meet each other and the townspeople to exchange reminiscences and view with fnendly competition the different entries in the fair stimulation towards the production of the highest qua lity in all classes of farm produce is something to be desired particularly at this lime when wartime demands on our food supply necessitate the minumum of waste be it from n poor original product or otherwise the kings plate was run this year in toronto and well while perhaps not quite on a par with tha the horse races out at the park on fair day provide lots of excite ment for the fans as well as plenty of fine form for the experts in horseflesh the whole program hos not of course been mapped out yet but there is one new feature winch of necessity has been publicized well in advance of the event this feature is the entrance of the different schools in the township including georritown public school in a victory garden contest every pupil in chool this year hai been encouraged to grow a victory garden at home if he has no garden a his own home perhaps some little friend s dad will let him use a corner of his the pupil will bring the finest specimens from their own victory garden and enter it in their school display the school that wins will receive a substantial cash priy we consider thot the fair board has struck on an excellent idea to rive encouragement to this important work among the juniors the agricultural society has a fincexccutive and an enthusiastic board of directors were looking forward to a bigger and better fair than ever this year on reading with many a long lonesome evening to fill in after the children are put to bed many women whoie husbands have gone to war are turning more and more to the entertainment found in a good book a good number of these busy mothers have never before had time to explore the delightful pastime of reading and after the war we predict they will not want to drop it once a taste for books is acquired a whole new world practically without boundaries is spread out before you there is only one drawback to this hobby weve found and that is a reluctance to do anything else but read when in the midst of a good tale this is not however a drawback which cannot be conquered by a little bit of good oldfashioned willpower we have an excellent library here in george town with good selections in fiction history biography science and drama the section for childrens books is good too and there are plenty of books which the child who likes to read cop enjoy not to be forgotten either is the selection of the finest periodicals published to be found on the library reading tables new books are constantly being added to the helves and we hope before long to have a short review of the additions as they come in forward march the garden brigade armed with spade rake and hoe trailing seeds in its wake is on the march with a full complement this spring nearly every bit of avail able land in town suitable for a garden is being put to use those who havent a patch of land at their disposal are either renting a plot or have kind neighbours who offer them a corner of theirs some lucky ones got their land seeded before everything was too waterlogged and growth has been exceptionally rapid to the new recruits in the brigade we would like to point out a couple of things they might over look first aim to grow vegetables which have the high est nutritional value spinach squash carrots and to matoes are all high in vitamin content and are com paratively easy to grow chose a garden site which re- actives fall sunlight shade from buildings and tree is oblecdonable soil filled with tree root should be avoid ed since these root will absorb plant food and moisture from tiw sail at the expense of the vegetable crops any ahiisjsii wo can be made to produce vegetable crops fcttt tug sititifc must be kept in check when you are swwms me seed tow only enough to ensure a good iguana
