drrtslori of th owjjl opportune time fpr curfew it looks very much as if georgetown u to have a curfew in the near future a letter from the local council of women touched off a discussion on this important topic at last weeks council meeting a recorded vote was taken after the pros and cons had been thoroughly aired with the majority voting in favour of having a curfew bylaw prepared this will be done at the next meeting and if it is passed will be come law we believe that such a step would be m accord with the wishes of the greatest majority of ratepayers who haye been shocked by the number of young boys and girls 1 6 and under running fhe street oi the town until all hours juvenile delinquency is catuedby just such practices and we believe the best method of deal ing with this problem is to take preventative measures rather than wait until the law has to step in- and some family has to bow its head in shame every so often we hear whispers of drinking and gambling among minors and oftener than not these habits are indulged in to fill in an evening which has no time limit these young sters need protection against themselves and a cuxfew would help matters considerably this is an opportune time to make a law re garding the curfew for the summer months ahead are the worst period for young nightowls in passing the proposed bylaw georgetown would be following suit with acton brampton and milton all of which have adopted a curfew for some -time- now and have found its operation a boon to the town parents and children alike the sequel to a curfew is to have a supervised place where the young people can go for recreation and although many town organizations are wellaware of this need in georgetown nothing can be done about it until after the war we hope then that this great community lack will be rectified however until that day comes the curfew if it is adopted would see that children i 6 and under are in the place where they are safest after an hour yet to be decided upon their homes historical records an item appeared recently in the municipal world which must of necessity provoke thought in the minds of those of us who are interested in the his torical records of the municipality it reads a wide spread need exists for some permanent place in every country for the depositing of records and relics of real historical value many families especially those who are the descendants of pioneers in each community have in their possession items of unusual local historical value many municipal offices lodges churches societies as well as individuals have old records of definite historical value which likewise in course of time may become lost or destroyed for want of a proper permanent public repository for same this is a proposal we would like to see adopted in carlcton place we have over 1 00 years of history behind us and the undertaking should be an interesting one carleton place canadian wartime arena can be success we imagine that many of the arenas in this dis trict which were lcsed for purposes other than skating this year will rever to their original use next season if comments of the various weekly editors in those towns are any indication of thestraws in the wind certainly if proof were needed that an arena can be a success in wartime georgetown is a good example in spite of an extremely doubtful start when the town took over the premises and appointed a board of parks management to operate it which in turn ran into many initial organization snags ihc arena has been a financial success up to date in addition to this georgetown has had some dandy skating and a season of very fine hoc key our intermediates and juniors all of whom were local stuff were in there playing a grand game right to the finish and both teims landed in the play offs games played here were cheered by large crowds of fans brampton no 24 basic training camp home games have all been played here and the playoff series are still in progress acton elora and brampton all operated open- air rinks this winter without much success actons arena is leased for storage purposes at present and last week editor dills commented in the free press it is generally conceded that openair rinks are not very suitable and the sooner the rink can be used again the better so it may be our boys will have tosail through an acton hockey team next year before they get to the playoffs then mrs maraton editor of the elora ex press said last week it will be with a feeling of relief that we see the last load of wool go out of the elora arena and its return to the use for which it was built we have a promising bunch of boys lined up for hockey but you cannot build a hockey team on dry ground any more than you can sail a ship so maybe well be meet ing up with an elora team too but we arent a bit afraid of the competition and join with these editors in hoping their towns will have their arenas for skating and hockey next year winter in a small canadian town juat doesnt seem right without a rink a real monument a country woman was hoeing in the garden at the side of her weatherbeaten house a neighbor stopped and leaned on the
