whole world as we wait for the momentous invasion of hit lers europe to start we are told in newscasts that the germans real ly consider it has begun with the crushing blows our airforce is making on their industries and communica tions but we know that while the airforce has suc ceeded in crippling their war production to a great ex tent it has not succeeded in making the luftwaffe come out and fight the germans are conserving every available plane for the supreme contest in spite of this however we have superiority in number and quality of planes we can consider air supremacy a strong asset in the coming struggle and struggle it will be many people have the idea that once the invasion starts we will march right through to berlin without much trouble one need only look at a map of their fortifications around the euro pean coastline to read of the distribution of their armed forces and listen to what the soldiers who come back have to say about the type of foe we have to beat to realize how foolish this supposition is and our agents report that to date germany has given no signs of cracking from within the toughest battle is yet to be fought as the eve approaches our men will need all the help we can give them both in a spiritual and concrete way we at home can pray and we can buy victory bonds were going ahead real estate is booming in georgetown a cou ple of weeks ago we wrote about the housing shortage here that condition still exists but lots and houses are changing hands more frequently and at better prices than for many a long day by the fall when the new homes now being contracted for are built the shortage of living accommodation here should be alleviated omewhat it is with a feeling of pride that we see george town growing there are no large war industries here to deflate the town after the war the growth is solid and here to stay it has been said that people and places can never stand still they must either go ahead or fall back our town is going ahead chain ltters and war savings stamps apparently chain letters are having a heyday once more they seem to run like epidemics we hadnt heard anything of them since the start of the war recently however some bright person saw possi bilities in the helpthewareffort angle to be incor porated in a chain letter wfiere to keep the chain un broken the receiver must buy war savings stamps naturally everyone should be encouraged to buy as many war savings stamps and certificates as pos sible but having bought these stamps there is no rea son why they should give them away to strangers unscrupulous promoters can make good many dol lars out of such trusting people the toronto better business bureau inc has ent us a bulletin describing how easily fraud can enter into such chain letters it is nothing but a racket and the postal authorities in ottawa will not allow such a letter to pass through the mails if they are able to de tect it spring cleanup saturday was the first really nice day of spring this year the chill winds abated and the sun shone warmly from a cloudless sky did you notice how the grass seemed to grow greener before your very eyes here and there one could see where the shoots of early plants had pushed their way through the earth the most common sight of the day was that of men yes and women too out in their yarda wielding rake and spade it was cleanup day in georgetown all right and as a result the grounds about by far the majority of homes in town are a credit to the householders and the town the spring sun somehow seems to show up the 1 clutter of wintertime within the house too and for this reason spring is the most thorough house- ciftuntng time of the year perhaps one of the worst parts of the boose to tackle with mop broom and duster is the cellar in this connection we read an amusing story in the fergus newsrecord some time ago it goes like this the head of a large furnace manufacturing firm was in town recently his work has taken him to many places but he does not lose interest in any furnace turned out by his company so wfien he came to fer gus on some business he remembered that there was a furnace in town which was not too satisfactory or needed parts or something of the- kind the husband escorted hini back to the kitchen but as they started down the cellar stairs the lady of the house appeared and began to apologize i was just going to clean up the cellar- she said i am sorry it is in such a mess but i thought i would wait until the fur nace was fixed the manufacturer followed the husband down the steps safelyin the cellar he remarked gravely i have been in house cellars all the way from vancouver to halifaxrand i never went into one of them yet that the lady didnt tell me she was just going tocean it up tfye next week canada at war we have at hand a very fine pictorial edition of canada at war issued by the wartime information board in it the country the people the navy army and airforce are pictorially represented and their accomplishments chronicled the food situation is also graphically illustrated and it was interesting to note that since 1 939 canadas high peacetime food production has expanded by 40 per cent munitions and canadian economics and finances are highlighted with pictures and our wartime emergence from nationhood to world power which has endless possibilities is also cjepicted pictorially the section dealing with the rcaf is espe- ciallygood air crews planes ground crews and leading air women are pictured in the story here also we found reprinted a sonnet by a 19 year old member of trie rcaf pilot officer john gillespie magee who was killed on active service in december 1 94 1 it has been ranked with rupert brookes the soldier and the canadian john mccraes in flanders fields the sonnet is entitled high flight oh i have slipped the surly bonds of earth and danced the skies on laughter- silvered wings sunward ive climbed and joined the tumbling mirth i of sunsplit clouds and done a hundred things you have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence hovring there ive chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air up up the long delirious burning blue ive topped the windswept heights with easy grace where never lark or even eagle flew and while with silent lifting mind ive trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space put out my hand and touched the face of god pilot officer john gillespie magee t year housing plan proposed for bubal canada bulldlnc program to provide ca nadian
