of the oanadlan weekly newspaper association and tbe ontarioquebec division ol the owjja the editors corner remedial steps needed in this titanic struggle to liberate the world from threat of slavery hundreds of young men from george town have volunteered to give their lives if need be in the cause the toll of war has already been felt in several georgetown homes some of our finest most popular boys have been killed in action they were the same peaceloving lads whom we knew personally to have been full of fun and zest for life boys who would never dream of harming anyone unless some thing very dear to them were threatened wives children parents friends in their particular cases everything their way of life in georgetown represented were threatened with the trail of destruction which victorious nazis leave in their wake those boys went out to fight to protect us aio form an intregal part of their home town as well as their dear ones we owe them a debt that we can never repay and to a bereaved family nothing not even a better way of life after the war can ever compensate for the loss of a loved one in a town the size of georgetown when the sad news becomes known that a boy is killed or missing it is heard with a sense of personal loss or anxiety for m 99 of the cases we know the lad it is hard to speak to the bereaved families of such tragedy yet all feel within our hearts what we have tried to express in these few lines here but do the families who are actually suffering loss realize how deeply all citizens of georgetown feel about the sacrifice their loved one has made it would be the most thoughtlessly cruel oversight if the town through some organization did not convey our most sincere sympathy to the families to our knowledge no such step has been taken to date we remember a couple of years ago a fine or ganization called the georgetown active service league was in operation however since the passing of the late w v grant chairman the league has ceased to function as far as we can ascertain it would be a fine thing if the executive woud call a meeting and re organize while it functioned the league gave many of our boys fine sendoffs when they left for overseas now with some of the servicemen returning and some of them listed never to return the active service league could perform a very vital function we are sure it would have the heartiest support of all townspeople re the housing problem thejioujiingshortage is still a definite problem in georgetown and when the iiewhfturustry becomes established in the fall bringing an estimated 40 or 50 new families to town the situation will not become any better true there are a few new houses being built but apparently they are not creating any vacancies be cause they are being builtpr spoken for by new families with the result that when one goes househunting it is something like a game of musical chairs we note that expansion of industry in our neighbouring town of acton has created a desperate situation we have several families living in george town who could not get housing accommodation there according to the acton free press a special bus is be ing run to erin by one of their companies because so many of their workmen have had to take up residence hat district we hope that georgetown will not be in the same plight when fall comes in connection with the building of new homes the advisability of a building bylaw in georgetown was discussed at the last council meeting evidently me citizenvtxi town have felt with good cause that their properties were considerably depreciated in value by the erection of some unsightly structure next door such a bylaw is in effect in other surrounding towns and although there may be some initial difficul ties in getting it framed and enacted we think it a good thing for a town to have we trust the matter will not be allowed to drop without due consideration ccf landslide both the liberal and progressive conservative parties received a rude jolt last week when the election in saskatchewan gave a landslide victory to the ccf wedding announcements and invitations distinctively styled the georgetown herald itufbe up as one columnist pointed out it comes as a re lief to most of ua who have been a little leary of so many radical changes that the socialist experiment will be carried out in another province certainly there must ijvc been serious dissatisfaction with the government eviously existing there for such a rightaboutface yet in this heretofore liberallyminded province the government in power for the past few years had a very good record in our opinion the ccf victory indubi- toubly represents the will of the people in that they want change from the old governmental policies many of 1 m perhaps realized that socialism is not likply to 1 the answer others were probably blinded by fine promiaes without realizing that just as in a small town fhere large projects are embarked upon the ratepayer ays the piper so in large governmental schemes the people themselves are the financiers v in this prairie province whose citizens are so dependent upon the moods of mother nature for their ihood the feeling underlying the wish for a change he yearning for a feeling of security no matter whe- her crops are poor or not we hope for their sakes sat the socialist experiment will prove successful such an overwhelming victory for a new party likely to nave two r important effects on dominion politics it is now exceedingly improbable that there will any dominion election this year and it is likely that fore either old parties go to the people for election iany muchneeded reforms will be made as well as proposed the worlds news seen through the christian science monitor am lntcthhotil dmty
