editor j boley member of the canadian weekly newspaper association and the ontarioquebec division of the owna the editors corner day of prayer marks 5th war anniversary as his majesty king george vi calls the em pire to a day of prayer on sunday september third we see before our eyes the first flush of victory dawning in an oppressed and war torn world it was exactly five years ago to the day sept 3 1939 when war was de clared we have since then fulfilled winston chur chills forecast of days filled with blood sweat and tears days when it seemed probable that victory seem ed too far off to even think about and days when we dared not let our thoughts follow to the end the direc tion which they were taking britain and her allies have blazoned the path to freedom for all peoples who con aider that life is not worth living without it the liberation of pans last week was symbolic to the french people and to all nazioccupied coun tries of their complete liberation from the german yoke a brilliant allied victory in trance cannot be long in coming germany with her race of supermen will be at bay with converging armies on three fronts evidently nazi fanaticism is still rampant and although none can say for sure it is quite possible they will re sist fiercely to the end but the end is assured and as we gather in our churches next sunday let us pray that complete victory may come soon much needed asset from all sides come favourable comments on the great improvement already wrought on the vacant mill street lot next to the post office the georgetown lions club bought this property which at the time of purchase was a very unattractive piece of land and have had it graded and levelled off the ugly duckling is showing definite signs of becoming a 1 swan before the metamorphosis can be completed however the club hopes to raise enough funds to make a lovely little park there for the convenience of the public last week they held a street dance and carnival which was well supported by the citizens proceeds of which will go towards this worthy cause a little park of this kind has long been needed m georgetown and will be a decided asset to the town from the standpoints of convenience pleasure and beauty we wish the lions club every success m their endeavour and hope it won t be too long before we 11 have a pretty park in which to pause before or after the climb uphill to the stores on main street actual enactment falls too short when religious education was proposed to be given to the students in the secondary schools in on tano a fairly strong voice of protest was heard throughout the province evidently the drew adminis tration has lent a listening ear to those who claimed that such a course would be fraught with difficulties due to the differences in bible interpretations by the various denominations for the proposal and the ac tual enforcement are widely different certainly no one could object to the mild pro gram to be undertaken in grades land 2 only of the public schools when the new term opens in septem ber the religious instruction will be two half hour periods at the beginning or close of the school day and may be conducted either by the teacher or a clergyman of any denomination as resolved by the particular school bpard the course is optional apd school boards parents pupils or teachers who have conscien tious objections to religious instructions may be ex empted for those children who will be receiving in structions from the teacher the course is prescribed to insure that the teaching will not be sectarian in charac ter but that the fundamental truths of religion upon which there is substantial agreement among all branches of the christian faith will be presented why this program should be announced as new we cannot see for it merely maintains and ex tends the present regulations for religious teaching in the schools by clergymen of various denominations the whole matter of rehgous teaching in our second ary or high schools has been dropped apparently to our mind the students m high schools would benefit far more from religious instruction than do the little tots in the first pubkc- school grades the young adolescents were we thought the important people whom the religious instruction was to reach tte boy and girla of this agegroup have in rnoat cases outgrown sundayschool and are at a dangerous period when they are apt to drift away from church entirely we believe it is this gap in their religious life which accounts in large measure for the rows of empty pews to be found in many churches today we dont mean to say that the beginners in public school should not have religious instruction be cause we realize that at their age foo this teaching is important admittedly the original proposals for reli gious msruction m high schools could have stood some changes and modifications but certainly the present enactment falls much too short of the originally an nounced intentions surely the system to be inau gurated in grades 1 and 2 of the public schools could have been extended throughout the schools and to all grades of the high schools as well to be best yet much as we dishke to admit it meres an un deniable tingle in the air these days telling us autumn is at hand thesummer has been a fine one both from the standpoint of personal comfort and from the agriculturists point of view there has been ideal weather for holidays and for working the crops throughout canada are the best in years and the rich farming district in our own vicinity is no exception this being the case georgetown fall fair on september 1 5 and 1 6 promises to be the best yet held it will probably establish many alltime high records in quality and quantity of exhibits we have had a few sizzler days too and we hope the busy housewives took advantage of these to sit in ahady spot plying em broidery and knitting needles so that the womens handicraft exhibit in the hall will truly reflect the skill of georgetowns fair sex the prize list is the best in several years thanks to the generosity of many public spirited citizens and firms you may have a copy for the asking
