the georgetown herald seventyseventh year of publication wednesday september 6th 1944 200 per annum 5c per copy council oppose japanese labour in local industry deputation from canadian legion wait on council in pro test to jap question smith stone employees over bridge ask that elm st be opened arena grant paid i there was no meeting of the town council for the month of august but on tuesday evening the regular sep tember meeting was held at the mu nicipal building with mayor harold cleave hi the chair reeve macdonald and councillors bradley orr mc joilvray armstrong thompson and yons present tile minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed and correspondence dealt with the british american oh oo asked for a tax rebate on their property on guelph st owing to the business being closed for sometime the matter will come before the court of revision mr w b fordof smith stone ltd addressed council on behalf of some of their employees who reside at the north end of the town asking that the roadway from this district to college view be opened the com pany had already graded part of this road and the petition asked that the balance of the rightofway be put in shape for travel council seemed sym- pathetic to the request but felt that it would be impossible to do anything at this time as the town budget could not stand this further expenditure it was decided however that council would look over the roadway and see what could be done mr jos gibbons asked council if they would agree to the town s share in placing a new fence between his pro perty on charles street and the park council were quite willing to do this providing the rest of the property owners were agreed to do so mr gibbons is to contact them and report at the next meeting mayor cleave reported that he and several members of the council along with other representatives from indus try business and church had been called to a meeting that afternoon at the federal sales engineering co ltd in regard to the company em ploying canadian born japanese as instructors on intricate machines in their plant it seems that a number of japs are skilled in that type of ma chine and are available for employ ment here he said that the company did not want to bring probably more than 3 or 4 and that they wanted to get the feeling ol the people of the town before doing so he said he also believed the company had done con siderable advertising for mechanics to no avail and the selective service had not been able to ghe them any other help mr cleave reported that mr sneyd of the british columbia securities commission working in the interests of the government in ttie decentraliza tion and placing of the canadianborn jap addressed the meeting and gave views on the situation at this point a large deputation from the canadian legion post 120 waited on council those addressing council were president harold stal- xord col g o brown wm roney charles parton fred mccartney and alex taylor the delegation asked that the town council protest shortly to the management of federal sales and engineering co ltd and 10 the se lective service against hiring cana dianbom japanese or any other ja panese in georgetown remarks were not any too complimentary toward the jap and our reporter took it that they were certainly not wanted in the com munity by the legion members x mayor cleave told the deputation that the council would give the mat ter serious thought and that a report woud go to the legion that evening he further said that while the council could protest strongly against the im portation of jap labour they had no jurisdiction in the matter and that the final analysis would be with the com pany and the selective service council took the attitude that as we have no japs here at the present time it would not be long before a colony would be established here if we let one or two come in they believed towns people generally would nof sanction the move and they formed the follow lng motion protesting to both the company and the head of the labour department at ottawa that this council go on record as strongly protesting the importation of japanese labor to the industries of georgetown and that a copy of this re solution be sent to thejfweral sales and taglneertng co ltd and to the minister of labour the motion carried unanimously the council passed payment of 9000 to tt board of parks management the amount of their requisition the mayor went on record as not favour ing the payment of this amount he contended thafoke arena had been a white elephant long enough and thai the parks board should be paying the town something instead of the town giving up then income of taxes water rates etc and granting a mill on the tax rate u necessary the fire brigade were given the usual grant of 150 00 for convention expenses the treasurer was authorized to sell up to 10 000 in victory bonds if need be to meet current expenditures council decided to repair the side walk on king st if a contractor can be secured the mayor was instructed to arrange for a public service in the town should the armistice come at any time be tween germany and the allies the
