imports of purs up since the introduction of the price ilxing in lfrtl until recently imports of furs from the united states have been limited to onethird of the amount imported in 1941 from the time of the recent lifting ot this restriction there has been a sharp increase in the entry into canada of furs of all kinds particularly of persian lamb which promises to be the leader for womens coats next winter pelts of this fur which oome principally from south west africa and persia may sell from tl to 15 each depending on the gloss sheen or tightness of the curl to make a womans persian lamb coat of average slae requires about 30 pelts but persian lamb is an inexpensive fur compared with mink top grade mink pelts sold this year at a peak price of 58 pelts of indlferent or poor qua lity were bought for around 6 it takes 80 pelts to make a mink coat and such a garment made of selected top grade pelts would retail at around 7500 with care such a coat would last more than the lifetime of the average person among furs of strictly canadian production mink muskrat and silver fox are leaders in recent years what are known as new mutation types of silver fox have caused the sharpest changes in the field of production of this fur among the new types are the platinum platinum silver pearl plat inum white mark silver glacier blue and arctic blue such pelts recently sold in montreal at a top price of 300 each but the average price in the high grade brackets ran from 125 to 250 though a low grade silver fox pelt may be bought for below 10 muakrat of which canada is a large producer and the fur from which hudson seal coats are made is always a ready sell er pelts recently sold from 1 to about 350 each according to quality attention to quality mr ritchie says that those engaged in the fur production industry are now paying much more attention to quality since grading was introduced in 191 on fur pelts for export it has caused an all round improvement in produc tion more attention is being paid to breeding and fur ranch management so as to get better pelts before the war britain marketed about 65 per cent of the output of canadian silver fox pelts since 1930 that market has been closed and the united states market has been open for 70000 pelts per year in 1939 canada produced about 385000 silver fox pelts last year the output was about 140000 but of infi nitely higher grade than in the pre war years just now there is a big demand for furs because people have money to buy them and with the shortage of trappers and help for the fur farms at a premium the supply is none too plentiful and the demand keen boys listed who received cigarettes the following boys overseas from georgetown and glen williams receiv ed a girt of 100 cigarettes each last week from the proceeds of a silver col lection taken at the concert and com- munltyslng song at huttonvule park a week ago sunday night their names were taken alphabetically from an overseas list and
