fair the directors of escjuesing agricultural society take pleasure in presenting to the people of georgetown and district a program of wholesale entertainment backed by an un excelled exhibit of farm stock grains vegetables flowers domestic science needlework childrens work and junior and senior institute work the war years have not been easy years for the directors of this longestablished society and they have worked hard to maintain the institution at the same high level through the generous support of its contributors and exhibitors it has been able to do so the govern ment recognizing the fact that canadas great basic in dustry is agriculture has done its best to encourage the continuance of fall fairs throughout the dominion georgetown fall fairs afford an excellent opportunity to display the products of agriculture in this district also to advertise to the buying public that the highest quality stock and produce are available in our county the program for the fair includes a wide range of midway attractions not obtainable other years with refreshment booths ball games horse racing yes and baby shows there will be no dull moments this year lm go to the fair and meet your old friends and make new ones its a community effort deserving of support youll be amply rewarded both from a stand point of entertainment and educational value the ughts are on again the lights are going on again all over the world the glad tidings that strict blackout regulations would no longer be in effect in malta and london was indeed welcome and heartening news a both malta and london will go down in history as being in the front line of battle and as winning that battle we in canada free from bomb threats find it hard to realize what horrible disasters the brave people of these cities have survived the people of london deserves a special salute for they have undergone a second blitz more terrible in some ways than the first the capture of the robot bomb launching sites in northern france has reed that battered city once more may they never have to en dure such a living hell again their brave spirit will be written indelibly in the annals of history civil reestablishment now that victory and the end of the war seem nearer than they have ever been more serious consi deration is being given to the reestablishment of our fighting men in civilian life we imagine most civilians and many soldiers too are not fully acquainted with the opportunities the government has provided for service personnel upon their discharge last week an informative little book came to the office entitled back to civil life it is issued by the minister of pensions and national health honorable ian a mackenzie the foreword states the booklet was prepared to inform members of the armed forces and canadians generally of steps taken for civi lian rehabilitation of those in uniform we havent heard of it being widely distributed to either factions to date but believe it would be an excellent idea and the money wellspent if this were done it is equally important for the servicemen and the canadian public to know what has been done to fit them for their return to the dominions normal peacetime occupations in the booklet all matters pertaining to the actual discharge are dealt with such as order and method clothing allowance rehabilitation grants and war service gratuities transportation home and return of dependents from overseas the part rehabilitation boards play is fully discussed as is the post discharge reestablishment order with its five classes of benefits outofwork while taking vocational training while temporarily incapacitated while awaiting returns from private enterprises while continuing education in con nection with the last mentioned all phases and particu lars of special courses including university training are brought to light the important matter of pensions is lolly dealt with and the veterans land act is simply explained were keeping the booklet in a handy place so if anyone wishes to read it wed be only too glad to blame the inventors of writing this month children return to school for another d m gowdy and muierto u ttiia one her troops in the fields have always operated as a corps under jbrltlah army command but for i first time ttielr numbers stndfiwpmpfl in a particular thea tre justify their ranking as an auto nomous unit it need hardly be added that on whatever front the cana dians have appeared alike in the last war and in this hey iiave always won recognition as belonging to the cream or the imperial troops equally notable are canadas other contributions to the cause of the united nations with a population of no more than 12000000 she has raised herself to third among them in naval power and fourth in air power and in the output of war supplies of all des- scrptlons munitions no less than food and raw materials no nation has thrown itself more hwboleheartecuy into the worlc of destroying hulerfsm trouble first be gan about 5000 years ago in mesopotamia and in egypt with the invention of writing whether you are glad or sorry that mankind ever hit upon this means of storing up knowledge you will find the royal ontario museums exhibits of the earliest writings a fascinating study both the mesopo- tamian and the egyptian systems in the beginning were an attempt to record events and ideas through the use of standardized pictures in mesopotamia writing was done on soft clay with a wedgeshaped instrument through the centuries the picture forms evolved into a system of wedgeshaped marks in egypt a correspond ing change is seen in the brush writing on papyrus although the pitographs carved in stone scarcely altered during 3000 years of history the egyptian script shows mankinds first attempt to formulate characters lepresenting single sounds instead of syllables and whole words since both these countries also developed numerical systems in mesopotamia with units of 60 in egypt with units of 10- we may truly say that they are responsible for the pangs of reading writing and rithmetic a progressiveconservative letter to the citizens of halton we are now in the climax of the
