day georgetown servicemen are coming home in greater and greater numbers and dominion day saw seven more local boys back home in the persons of lieut paul barber lcpl fred harr ison and ptes bill chaplin walker vpleve francis golden bruce mc- tjartney and e a hill earlier in the week dvr j w e davidson arrived at his home on the glen road while flying officer jim kelly reached can ada iast thursday and is now reunited with his wife in winnipeg lclcpl frod harrison a veteran of four years service in juopl fred harrison mm who won bis military medal for gallantry at or- tona enlisting in july 1940 with the 48th highlanders he later transferred to the armoured corps and went overseas on june 17 1041 he was wn tbc first canadian troops in sicily and among the many one souvenirs he has sent home is a coat made for him by an old sicilian tailor ljcpl harr- isqnyafltas the first allied soldier the stefilan had seen and the gift was in gratitude for their liberation a vet eran of the sicilian and italian cam paigns he has since seen action in france holland and germany and took port in the victory parade in prague cechoslovakda lopl harrison was met in toronto by his two children diane and freddie then hurried to toronto general hospital where his wife formerly bessie walk er is recuperating from a serious op eration pte walker cleave another veteran of the italian cam paign is pte walker cleave who is spending a months leave with his mother mrs iobel cleave at their home on emery street walker just missed a reunion with his brother lj8 franklin cleave who has been home on leave but is back on duty with minesweeper of the atlantic fleet pte cleave was employed at c j bucks store prior to enlistment in juty 1943 he trained at guelph and camp borden and went overseas as a cook with the rcasc in august 1943 he went to italy with the hastings and prince edward regiment and moved with the regiment to prance holland and germany pte brace mccartney pte bruce mccartney one of geor getowns youngest soldiers overseas enlisted in october 1m3 prior to his 18th birthday and had previously the weather by h l hutt now that we are into july and have all the figures for the month of june ne and that while night temperaturee for the month were about normal 50s degrees daj temperatures were 68 4 or 4 4 degrees below normal making 11 a rather cool month the rainfall was 3 71 or nearly a quarter of an inch above normal summer is now off to a good start with plenty of moisture for growing crops and farmers are getting ideal weather for haying following are the records a lad of 16 training in portsmouth camp borden and debert he debarked in england last christmas day he was with the toronto scottish in belgium holland and germany prior to enlistment he was employed with smith stone ltd bruce is the son of mr and mrs fred mccartney his father who is deputy zone commander of the canadian legion is a veteran of four years ser vice overseas in the last war with the 68th battalion pte mccartney has enlisted for service in the pacific and will spend a month s leave at home prior to leaving for advanced training f o jim kelly returning from service overseas with the rcaf for the second time is fo j d kelly who arrived in canada last thursday and is now with his wife fin winnipeg fo kellj expects to be home in georgetown wllhln the next week or two enlisting in march 1941 he trained in toronto oshawa wind sor dafoe sask and trenion in wire less work and went overseas in 1943 shot down on a raid over cambrai prance on june thirteenth 1944 he was in hiding with the french under ground until a thrilling rescue by a british plane on sept 8th he spent a month 5 leave in canada last octob er and returned for further service overseas the following month he was with a bomber crew in raids over ber lin and later was engaged in dropping food supplies to liberated areas his yourger brother william graduates this weekend as a second lieutenant from brockville o t c where he i yanked second in his class lieut paal barber bon of mr and mrs c h barber and husband of the former ruth mo- kally lieut paul barber was among the happy group of homecomerb on dominion day paul was cne of four officer members of the barber family who went oveseas with the lome scots raiment in june 1941 since last christmas he has been a member of the queens own rifles glen garden party a crowd of well over 1000 enjoyed a garden party and street dance in olen williams last friday night after a day which threatened rain the wea therman smiled and it was a lovely irene mitchell may as accom panist comedy by harry hale and vocal selections by john wagstaffe georgetown girls pipe band were al so present and played several selec tions for the enjoyment of the ga thering those in charge of arrangements in cluded mrs j r williams entertain ment mrs jack crawford booths mrs w hadley lucky draw the street dance which featured fishers orchestra was in charge of tom hill and jack addy roy norton was in charge of games lucky draw winners were mrs john wheeler sr lamp mrs- sutcliffe knitting bag chris frank cushion the committee were most appreciative of the four years ago and she is living in edinburgh with their two children norman and robert pte frank golden pte frank j golden who completed five years of army service on july 1st is the son of mr and mrs frank gol den and will spend a months leave in town with his parents he went overseas three years ago with the irish regiment and has served in italy belgium and holland pte golden has enlisted the anniversary cake made by mrs c a grant a niece of mrs schoales many bouquets and i gif ts4noudlng a purse of money from immediate relatives were received by the honoured couple mr and mrs schoales have one daughter mrs m patterson who as sisted in receiving the guests also four granddaughters their only son joseph h gave his life in world war i at the age of 19 the schoales family came to can ada from england and lived in stew arttown for some years moving to toronto thirtyfive years ago mrs schoales is a sister of the late a j smethurst of lbnehouse congratulations are extended to mr and mrs schoales from mends to this district united church sunday school picnic at stanley park erin a on thursday afternoon june 28 about 120 members of the united church sundaj school and 60 adults took advantage of the ideal weather to enjoy the annual sunday school vlcnic to stanley park el in the transpoitauon arrangements were ably handled by howard lullco and e l arnold and art scott very kindly of fered the use of one of his buses to assist in the transportation of the children swimming and boating were enjoyed to the full during the early part of the afternoon after which a full orts program was carried out under the convenorshtp of miss m camp bell at 5 30 the children sat down to injoy in their usual hearty manner the picnic supper refreshment ar rangements were convened by mrs
