harold davison hrihft of the canadian weekly newspaper aaaocuuon and the ontarioquebec division of the owna the editors corner secularization of fergus church a unique religious ceremony in st james church of england fergus last week occasioned from the recent sale of the building and the planned erection of a new place of worship in view of the original de hcation and consecration of the building as a religious place a secularization service was held the minister read a petition from the congregation giving thteasons for the request following which right reverend l w b broughall bishop of niagara declared the conae cration removed and the reversion of the building to secular use in his sermon the bishop reminded the congre gation that the church is made up of souls and that while a building may be beautiful and admired we look to the people who minister there as the real church thus when the building is secularized the church itself does not suffer as wherever the congregation might gather in thetiame of christ they are on holy ground civic holiday in georgetown next monday august 6th has been proclaimed a civic holiday in georgetown and thanks to the ac tivity of the local legion branch there will be no cause to complain that there is nothing doing in town that lay for some months now an energetic committee headed by fred mccartney has been busy with plans for a victory e celebration and advance publicity promises a big day for young and old in the afternoon a midway games bingo and races will draw crowds to the park and to ensure that every youngster will share in the fun there is no ad mittance charge for children in the evening there will be a garden party featuring a group of toronto enter tamers dancing in the armouries and the grand draw ing for lucky draw prizes there h be no need to go out of town for amusement next monday so let s all turn out and make it a real jamboree v fall fairs a comin v now that summer s half gone our thoughts turn to fall and we begin to look forward to george itown s fall fair the 99th this time and one which promises to outshine its predecessors the fall fair is an institution which lends a certain charm to rural life and in no community is there a better fair than this this yea the directors are anxious io enlist the support of the ladies to bolster the domestic science classes which have fallen off rather badly in the past few years there is a good prize list which makes it profitable for the culinary experts to display their wares bo how about it ladies the secretary reports that cattle and horse classes are expected to reach a new high a new fea ture will be a poultry lawn show jointly sponsored by the fair board and the georgetown and halton coun ty poultry association the board is fortunate in this regard to have c e hernngton who has a wide con nection in the trade helping to promote the show and i i e th manyont e wiltbe on hand with their prize stock another highlight of the fair will be arts and crafts exhibits for a group of geor tetown ladies have been active in promoting handcraft through heir cooperative organization and are always ready to show fair goers what can be done in this field there will of course be lots of amusement a large midway has been engaged there will be both harness and road races high jumping horses and we fully expect to see the largest crowd in history this year jamming into the fair gounds in the park sep ember 8th is the big day so mark it on your calendar now it takes time everyone would like to see all our georgetown boys home from overseas this month and yet it is an impossibility to provide transport for this purpose in a short space of time some idea of the magnitude of the task of re patnation can be gained by figures re cently quoted in a daily newspaper despatch twenty pullman and hospital trains which if lined up would extend a distance of nine miles were required to move homewards the 1 0 q00 veterans who recently came home on the lie de fnnce and the letitn it is to the credit of the railway companies that within an hour after the ships docked the trams were rolling westward at the rate of one every half hour it is in terestmg to note that on the trip from halifax to mon treal food consumed included 20 000 pounds of meat and 18000 eggs th gives just a small idea of the work involv ed in returning our men to georgetown and to the at his desk again here is andy clarke culling the happendngs throughout ontario and weekly newspapers of rhis neighborly quebec lollowing an illness which news broadcasts heard over the cbc confined him to hospital and home for mideast network from toronto on some weeks andy has a host of lis sundays at 10 05 ajn andy la re- teners in this district who are georgetown ontario directory thousands of communities all across canada it takes time and speedy as the service is it will be several momhs yet before the last of our georgetown boys will be with us again summer sports this summer there has been a real revival of summer sport in the district and a live wire series of softball and hardball games is being held in the park we are indebted to joe stamp for his efforts in keeping herald readers posted on the series and for doing a one man publicity job which is helping to revive base ball interest in town don brill has been keeping us posted on the hardball league and doing a remarkably good job of reporting in this field it has been impos sible for your editor to get out to the games but we have heard that there aren t as many spectators as there should be and it is hoped more fans will turn out to give the teams their support it s the kind of sport we like to see in own home talent with no imports and good clean entertainment for our local lads then too we have an active lacrosse team at norval once again publicized by j j s so there s no lack of good amateur sport in the district regarding the local ball games we think it would be a good idea if there was a notice board somewhere in town where forthcoming games could be advertised we would suggest erecting a board on the corner of the municipal building where fans could keep posted on coming games there s no reason why a crowd of two or three hundred shouldn t be on hand for every game and we think they would be if they had some notification f r watson ixdjb 1lpjbl office
