davison uembei of the canadian weekly newspaper assortaumo and um ontarioquebec division ot the cwna the editors corier government support for a sports i director the information which mr stanley hall mp p brought to the father and son social last friday night was of primary interest to the executive of youth inc the new group which will promote athletics among georgetown young people the province plans to assist nonprofit com munity groups which are fostering recreational pro grammes by paying 33 13 per cent of the salary of the director of such a programme and a similar percentage of the salary of fulltime or parttime assistants as well as 20 per cent of approved operating and maintenance costs exclusive of capital costs this proviso is neces sary as it is impossible for the government to assist in paying for expensive buildings which are planned by many communities as war memorials it is one of the first aims of youth inc to secure a paid fulltime sports director to inaugurate a community athletic programme and the anticipated government support will materially aid in financing such a plan we anticipate that at the first meeting of the group tonight plans will be made to advertise for a sports director and we are confident that it will not be necessary to bring in a man from outside but that by advertising locally a suitable man will be found a- few years back a local man did a real one- man job for hockey in georgetown a job which event ually led to the position of sports director for the in ternational nickel co up north there are others in town we are sure with those same potentialities for leadership which gordon alcott possessed the success or failure of a community sports plan will rest to a great extent on the choice of a proper man to be sports director once chosen it will be his job to see that things run smoothly and that george town will be a leader among small communities in de veloping and encouraging healthy athletics pack in the lineup a revival of interest in national league hockey ss promised in georgetown this year with bob gold- ham back in the maple leafs lineup after an absence of three years in the navy bob had one memorable year in professional ranks back in 1941 when he was the golden boy of that years stanley cup champions and we havent been able to get quite so enthused these last years with no local color in the big time it is a great thrill to local sport fans to see a kid from john street who learned his hockey in the arena across the road reach the peak in his chosen career and its fine to see that success has not gone to his head and that he retains his interest in georgetown and wants to assist in any way he can to promore sports back home we wouldnt be surprised at all to see him out coaching the midgets and juveniles this winter when he has a day off with bob the games the thing whether its pro fessional sport or the most simonpure amateur well be following his career this year with in terest in the toronto papers and watching him step far ther along the road to stardom guest editorials were looking forward again this year to edu cation week when the herald editorial page is turned over to the editorial efforts of ghs students the calibre of last years editorial material was exceptionally high and set a standard which will really be hard to beat this year it spoke well for the training received by pu pils in our public and high schools the latter despite severe handicaps of operating a school of higher learn ing in an inadequate poorly ventilated building at present it is financially impossible for geor getown to consider extensive improvements to the high school building when we are faced with the heavy costs of installing a sewage system ftut as soon as the town can see its way clear financially to embark on a further major project we think that the first item should be a completely renovated riigh school building well- ven tilated with assembly room and gymnasium and faci lities for manual training and a business course heading towards normal this week the advertising columns of this news paper are graced with something which hasbeen absent for some time the news that washing machines are once more on the market it is a portend of the return to normalcy when once more we will be able to buy ator tires canned salmon and white shirts candy bars will openly display themselves on f and ration coupons will not be needed tcf buy letter to the editor editor georgetown heriald dear sir i am finally compelled to write you and bring to your attention and the good citizens of georgetown the de plorable conditions that prevail at the saturday night dances in georgetown arena the one complaint concerns the lack or order in the rose room with urawung ind drunkenness rampant another complaint is the thievery practiced nt most of these dances with many valuable articles being stolen and nothing ever recovered complaint number three is the law less parking with many of the patrons to these dunces driving their cars on to lawns and private drives of john st residents the last complaint concerns the noise and general disorder whan the dance is over where these young peo ple flock out to their cars yelling and swearing and mating a general bed lam surely the members ot the arena board or our town fathers can reme dy this eltuatlon with more strict jrmvlslan if this isnt possible then it rose room should be closed to public dances until law and order pre- ii lis john 8t taxpayer victory bonds butter and sugar slowly but surely we are heading back to normalcy but though peace has come we are still facing a ninth victory loan to help pay costs in curred and still being incurred by the war by buying bonds to speed rehabilitation and re construction we will be doing ourselves a favour in saving to buy some of these warscarce articles referred to above as they come back on the market as has been said nine times before were not asked to give but to lend our money at a good rate of interest theres no sacrifice in that masquerade halloween d anc e stanley park erin wednesday evening october 31 modern aires
