first time we thought it would be of interest to devote this week editorial to some brief glimpses of nominees for public office first we instroduce mayor harold cleave georgetowns head man for the past two years who will be guid ing the towns affairs for another term by virtue of his acclamation at last fridays meeting a lifetime resi dent he is one of our most successful agricultural re sidents and has a farm home on the northwest side of no 7 highway within town limits a veteran cam paigner he entered council in t927 has been reeve for two spells 1930 to 1935 and 1940 to 1942 and was honoured with the wardenship of haltou in 1935 de feated in the 1 943 mayoralty contest by the then may or joseph gibbons he reentered council as mayor by acclamation the next year and defeated mr gibbons in the elections last year he has a wide variety of interests including the bowling and curling clubs oddfellows two masonic lodges always interested in sports he was on the local hockey team some fifteen years ago thos l lyons retired farmer who lives on die corner of edith and church streets is an aspirant for the reeveship after serving seven terms on the town council he has lived in town for the past ten years after selling his farm in the cheltenham district mr lyons was the first candidate to declare his 1946 in tentions for at last years nomination meeting he pro mised to go up or out this year ken macdonald who has represented george town on county council for two years was a council lor before becoming reeve in 1 944 this will be kens first contest for reeve as he has been given an acclama tion in his two previous terms he has the unique dis tinction of being one of two manufacturers of knitting machines in canada and is kept busy serving the needs of the trade from his shop at the rear of the legion building at present he is building a new shop behind nis home on market street as the legion needs his present location for an expansion program a legion member reeve macdonald is prominent in the lome scots band and has been president of that organization joseph gibbons no stranger to municipal politics is providing some competition in ward i this year for the two present incumbents who are also in the race mayor of georgetown for ten years he retired in 1 944 made an unsuccessful try at the mayors chair last year running against mayor cleave mr gibbons lives above his barber shop on main street is a keen student of municipal affairs which are almost a hobby with him during his term of office he was instrumen tal in purchasing the present municipal building and in the town assuming ownership of the arena garfield mcgilvray better known as mac is employed with this newspaper lives in a frame and stucco house on the highway across from the united church ward i councillor for two years he is the capable secretary of esquesing agricultural society which sponsors the annual fall fair and also finds time to act as publicity chairman for the board of trade and the lions club he is active in promoting hockey in town and serves on the official board of the united church w p bill thompson is the fellow who leaves the maple leaf dairy bottle on your doorstep and is one councillor who will be calling on the voters every day representing ward i for the past two years he is one of the three who seek election in that ward for next year he lives on george street which runs west from the monument and is familiarly known as top street bill is an enthusiastic curler james goodlet makingliis thisd bid for office in ward 3 is a wellknown main street merchant for merly proprietor of what is now caldwells food store purchased the oldreid hardware this year and turn- fed it into one of the most attractive stores in town 5vhb five in new stone home in the pines on edith bruce mackenzie one of hree candidates for council in ward 3 is a georgetown boy who recently came back to town afjer living inbrampton for a few years he served with the rcaf in the war is now local agent for the london life insurance co bruce is building a new home across from the bowling green on edith street and expects to be moving in before the end of the year sid orr ward 3 councillor for two years and minister of finance on last years council is the chap who owns the big white barn at the foot of char les street he moved to georgetown from the city four years ago and purchased the former swackhamer home on maple avenue he is an exponent of an other bank for georgetown and has kept a close eye on town expenditures during his term of office thos eason jr is one of four seeking election in ward 2 which will give two new faces to council this year clifford bradley having moved to erin and armstrong retiring after a twoyear term tom made one try for council the year before last he is employed with alliance paper mills and has just re cently opened the rosedale greenhouse in association with his fatherinlaw beside their home on murdock street he is a member of the choir and peoples war den at st georges church of england c e herrington who conducts a fancy poul try business under the name of sunset farm is a john street resident who is a candidate in ward 2 corey edits a monthly poultry paper feather fancier tra vels around quite a bit as a show judge and is recogniz ed as one of the best in canada thos l leslie a durham street resident- is a retired farmer who still takes an active part in the affairs of esquesing agricultural society a newcom er to local politics he has been warden of the county during his service as a township and county councillor jim ritchie also a ward 2 candidate is a geor getown boy making his first try for office he lives in the grandview apartments on queen street across from the station but has recently purchased a lot and intends building himself a new home during the war he worked at malton is now employed with smith ot stone and is a prominent curler w h kentner returns to the hydro commis sion for a twoyear term having received an acclama tion member of the firms of w h kentner ot son and the georgetown lumber co he has served several terms on the commission he is a resident of ward 2 living on emery street near the cnr station miss annie ryan who represents ward 1 on the public school board is a retired principal of the school she has played an active part in red cross work in georgetown during the war years with her sister miss k ryan sjie lives on the guelph highway across from holy cross church john d kelly ward 2 representative on the school board lives on albert street is an official of the barber division provincial paper ltd mr kelly is prominent in fraternal and service club work and was instrumental in organizing the safety patrol at the pub lic school e v maccormack who again represents ward 3 on the school board is one of georgetowns main street druggists and lives on charles street out past the park he is also active in fraternal organiz ations and
