the estimated salary of a recreation direc tor included in this years town council budget there is no barrier in the way of immediately advertising for the position to be filled the georgetown recreational council is holding a meeting tonight and it is expected that this is one of the items which will be foremost on the agenda the hiring of a director within a months time will enable the g r g to go ahead with plans for baseball this summer and any other summer sports ac tivities which the town and district may wish to indulge in there is some talk of lacrosse anct we know the sportsmen in the glen are particularly interested in re viving canadas national sport which has been dormant in georgetown for many years there are also plans to provide recreational activities for the girls in towrl to date the program has been exclusively for boys as without a fulltime director it was impossible to make plans sufficiently broad to take in more than a juvenile and midget hockey league combined with boxing in- struction for a class of youngsters who have been meet ing in the armouries once a week it is gratifying to see the elected representatives of the town putting the stamp of approval both moral ly and financially on a program which will have ever growing results in the years to come local organiza tion had its inception when a group of a dozen or two interested men met together two or three times last fall to talk over the project a public meeting in early no vember in the oddfellows hall elected a group of fif teen to form the official recreational council and un der the presidency of e v maccormack the grc laid plans to bring hockey back to the youngsters in the district that this was successful was amply proven when a crowd of over 800 witnessed the final playoffs in the arena and saw firstrate hockey described by one of the referees the maple leafs gus bodnar as on a par with anything he had seen in midget or juvenile ho ckey in toronto with a parttime organization making such a wonderful start one can imagine what possibilities there will be when a director is hired who can give all his time and ability to the job at hand be it hockey dr baseball handcraft lacrosse manual training or any activity which may come within the scope of recreation georgetown is making a wise move and we should thank both the town council and the grc for their leadership the members oe the georgetown lions club invite you to their st patricks dance monday march 18 1946 in the rose room of the georgetown arena modern aires orchestra 200 couple dancings the new county assessing systemintroduced this year by halton council our change of heart is direct ly due to the excellent presentation of the case for the system presented last friday evening by mr j p coo- mbe representing the department of municipal af fairs at a joint meeting of the georgetown and esque- sing councils mr coombe is a good talker and more than that he had so many facts at his finger tips and made such a convincing case for the system that we were at a loss to pick out any major flaws in the points he presented if the county system measured as he called it with the same yardstick to ensure all municipalities assuming their fair share of county taxes can avoid the yearly ar gument about equalization and the constant threat of costly litigation which is always present then one con crete result will have been accomplished another point which was stressed was that an assessor holds one of the most important positions in a town and is invariably underpaid the whole tax struc ture and the lifeblood of the townseconomiclife rests on his shoulders and yet it is assumed that he can do his job in a few weeks or months of parttime work relying on his owningenuity to figure out his basis for assess ment andshaving- his rates compare with other munici palities with whose assessors he has no contact it does mean that there will have to be a fulltime position created to fulfill the duties expected of an ass- ssor under the new setup with the expenses incidental to the new position it will mean somewhere close to two mills on the tax rate but if a fulltime assessor can make adjustments which will result in the owners of un dertaxed properties paying a larger share and if it mea- ma clearmg of the air in county council taxprobleros the results will be worth the expense 4 mr coombe u a good talker and were convin- dirty spring weather 1s just around the corner when your car tells the story of muddy roads come to the sign of the big ba we specialize in wash
