ever all around tbe circuit the race was much closer than usual and it is m- tacesuiig to co the team stand ings with that of last year the montreal canadians wog the honon jar tbe third time in success ion but they didnt have the leadlbat they had other years in 1944 they ihv ished flnu with 83 points to 1m6 with 800 and this season they again led with 61 points they were ahead tin second team in 1944 by 25 points in 1m6 fay 13 points and this year by only 6 points turning to the other extreme hi the standing we t bid that jho tew york rangers were as consistent as was montreal the ran gers weer at the foot of the class in all the last three years in 1m4 they had a total of 17 points in ims the total was 33 points and this year they again were at the bottom with 35 points the toronto maple heastt proved to be a disappointment this season you will remember that they won the sta nley oup last season and were expec ted to head the league in the regular schedule this year but they failed bad ly and finished the season out of the playofxs for the first time since the gardens was built in 1m4 the leafs finished third with 60 point in ims their standing was again third with 63 points while this year they finished in fifth place with 45 potato it is interesting to notice that in 1m5 they were in third place with only 38 points behind the top team while this year they were down to fifth place yet only 16 point behind the top team another notable feature of this sea sons games was the return of so many players from service overseas ah of the teams took back several former players and most of them made good some seemed to be slow in hitting their former stride while others fitted right in overnight again this season a good many older players checked out of the blgh time and several morewill not be in the lineup when anotsier season has rolled around many of bm rearing pro players go back to their former ways of making a living while some take on coaling jobs others may try for the job of becoming ref er- the teams in the whi deserve for tbe way ttaoy gave thatr for vipe every opportunity to again make good in pro hookey it really has been an interesting wusuon and we expect that the standing of some of the teams will be quite different another year united church sunday school anniversary on sunday morning march 34th the sunday school cpj you cranked a handle and put a little gadget to your ear and listened tben o and behold a voice spoke to you that was the telephone of the 80s given to the world by the labours of alexander graham bell in his brantford workshop but to the rural women of thejay it was more than miraculous it was deliverance from the bleak isolation that they had thought would always be the lot of a fanners family no longer in times of sickness would children have to suffer and perhaps die for the want of prompt medical attention or advice no longer would the dawn to dusk toil of women be unrelieved by the sound of a friendly voice in the cities businessmen were quick to make use of this new means of com munication in rural areas the telephone was among the first of many inventions that wen to bring the comforts and conveniences of urban life to the farmhouses of canada thus the telephone was a great unifying element that brought canadians together to work side by side common good it fostered the cooperation that was the foundation of the national spirit of the pioneers and which in the future can and will be the inspiration for the greater development of a canada unlimited today in our purchase and holding of victory bonds and war pavings certificates we have another uraifyirig element with which to build a shin ing future for our irwtian fasit yiflpsjfluf
