scheme aa re ported in the news columns of this issue to establish a central high school to serve georgetown milton ac ton esquesing nassagaweya and a part of nelson township it is without doubt one of the most imprac tical suggestions which has come to our attention for some time and it is to be hoped that when a committee l of county council memlers meets next week to discuss it they will not be long in turning down the plan there is a certain advantage in the idea in that more courses could be offered and a student would have w a chance at a broader high school education other than this we can see no particular reason for the change and tne disadvantages more than talce care of this for one thing we feel a central school would des troy to a large extent that school spirit which is such an integral part of high school life the friendly rivalry between neighbouring towns the loyalty to ghs humble as it may be are things which do as much to shape character as the academic courses themselves this is something precious which a small town high school possesses in large degree coupled with this is the fact that all children of high school age in the cou nty would be absent from their homes for the greater part of the day eight oclock in the morning to six o clock at night we should judge which would deprive them of a certain amount of home life so necessary dur ing their formative years again we would be exchang ing the personalized instruction given by residents of the community for the more impersonal teaching of a staff who would see the children only during school hours and who would know nothing of their afterscho ol environment another clothing collection a second national clothing collection is in the offing and will take place from june 1 7 to june 29 the local organization has not yet been set up but after the good record set in this district last fall we expect that once again georgetown will be in the vanguard of con tributors with spring housec leaning in the air it is excel lent timing for a clothing drive and the early birds who are even now at this annual job are asked to put aside their contributions for next month according to word from clothing headquarters the need for clothing in europe is desperate even the most generous gift of money cannot meet this urgent need and our contributions must be of more personal character every family is urged to get out every pair of shoes every piece of usable wearing material that can be spared for it will help to save human life georgetown is musical it has often been said that georgetown is a mu sical town and nobetter proof can be offered than the splendid showing made by our high school students at the peel music festival many have been the compli mentary rmarks made since the results were announced and we hope to see knox church filled to overflowing next monday when the complete festival program will be presented the evening is being sponsored by the george- town recreational council for two reasons to help show citizens that the councilors interested not only in athletics but has an equal interest in cultural activities and to raise a few dollars for the recreational program which is getting underway in town donations to the fund have not exactly b pouring in and there ia still a substantial deficit to clear up from the hockey season as well as money to be raised for this years activities the program as outlined by mr newman in cludes such varied activities as art classes hiking base ball stamp collecting and archery other activities will be added as time goes on and while large sums of mon ey are not required it will still mean several hundred dollars to give him the tools with which to work a busy yearrfor council we can think of no town council in the last de cade which has had such a record of special meetings as this years group it seems that a meeting a week instead of once a month is becoming a rule and no mee ting is complete without a delegation there seems to be so many important questions in the air sewage wartime houses changes in town services the opening of new streets and subdivisions to name but a few that it is impossible for council to deal with everything at regular meetings and it has become more man a chore for these publicspirited men to meet so frequently perhaps if it goes on some different plan for municipal government may have to be adopted possib ly standing committees will have to take a larger share of responsibility andsave time by presenting a report for adoption- rather than council as a whole discussing every problem small and large which cornea up pos sibly the remuneration paid to our council should be increased in keeping with added duties directory a e lepage realtor- head office
