for labour day at the park remem ber on the civic holiday the veterans from the local canadian legion chal lenged the smith stone team who had just won the herald trophy but smith and stone team weren work we oertalnly would appreciate them cold weatheb ccts attendance at st georges fair various groups in st george s church combined to present a church fair on the lovely grounds at the church last saturday afternoon and ev ening an extremely cold day made- attendanoe much smaller than anticl pated but it is estimated that about 150 will be realized for the fund be ing raised to pay for the renovations in the church basement in the afternoon the daughters of the ohuroh had a sale of home madt baking and served afternoon tea while the ladies of the wa were busy in the hot dog and hamburg booth the sunday school was in charge of the soft drinks and the tennis club held an open tumament and served ice cream there was a fish pond for the kiddies st george s club arranged the ev ening garden party of local talent which included tenor soloist tom wames marlene bludd and diane hillock tap dancing and songs ken neth harrison piano selections and fred warnes tap dancing iri t mitchell may of brampton was ac- campaist and ven w g o thomp son acted as masteroferemonles also on the program was mr dyer of hillsburgh who won the old time fiddlers contest at stanley park erin last week during the intermission paul barber conducted contests mrs may won the ladies nail driving with seven hits and jack england who tied with bill mc nally at five for the men won in th uebreaker kathleen coxe excelled at throwing the rollmg pin with mrs torn warnes close second a dutch auction provided novelty with marilyn warnes being the lucky winner monday next i labor day a public holiday ubofuwtowrt bantams win from weston hsln nearly sunk the gjto mm baseball teams second attempt with gord atoohs weston kids last wed nesday night before game time the field was liberally sprayed and the last two innings kept the spectators on ttie nop between the field and grandstand but the kids played on the game was a dandy errors were few and hits were as scarce as soap flakes don herrlngton anderson struck out pee wee huff man smacked out a nice single for the first hit of the game and keith crossed the pan with the first run don herrlngton made sure of his own game by smacking out another single on the first ball pitched and pee wee slid over home plate making the count two to nothing that s the way the game ended af ber another inning of play prevented the usual seven innings a little halfpint by the name of hurren played a stellar game at short for the visitors while walters at first and mofarland who took over the receivers position for the night looked good for the
