combined last saturday to make thejooth annual georgetown fair presented by the esqueslng agri cultural society in georgetown park tbe peak event of them all the wea ther was perfect w but not too hot after a long cold spell the hall never looked more beautiful crammed it was with exhibits the midway knd refreshment booths were bigger and better than any since pre war days and the crowd topped all prev loos records with estimates ranging well over the 6000 mark the crowd arrived early and staved late a clear sign that they were ex pecung a good show and were not dls appointed tory gregg whose fine job of announcing has added interest at the last two fairs was once again here to officiate at the grandstand mr gregg an international league hookey star several seasons ago is now on tbe staff of tbe wingham radio station and is much in demand for fall fair engagements memorial dedicated a feature of the fair was tbe dedlca hon of a memorial pylon and flag pole which was erected near the displays of fruits vegetables an flowers with husking com again pro minent were also wellfilled as was the ladles work six women s institutes entered the noncompetitive display georgetown llmehouse ashgrove hornby dublin and acton and received 5 each for displaying the work also in the ball were beautiful ex hlbits by norton ploral and rosedale floral and a kawleigh products booth by dick rlddall and a hydro farm wiring model display and a farm lm provement display sponsored by the dept of agriculture mrs stlgger had on display a cage of beautifully colored budgie birds fme antique exhibit highlighting the hall exhibit was a wonderful collection of antiques col lected under the supervision of mrs ann lawson and mrs john hunter assisted by mrs p w cleave to describe it in its entirety would be impossible lambng tibe items were the first threshing niachine in ontario owned by spencer wilson and a car ved box owned by prank petob and made by charles lount one of the men hanged in the montgomerys tavern incident in the rebellion h l hutt contributed a number of indian relics and ward ruddell a large collection of curios including a sale bill printed in georgetown 80 yrs ago there were maps and books one prin ted in 1602 a creed written by the bishop of chester and owned by the mas allen contributions from the willoughby family included a pepper grinder dinner bells and a wooden mallet and miss k mckay contributed a 1702 snuff box old quirts were shown by mrs patterson 150 years of ashgrove and mrs will stark 125 years and cy kennedy showed the first bicycle in georgetown and a fenian raid rule col a l noble had a number of articles including an 1870 baby carriage weigh scales and the first saw used in nerval mrs victor king mrs gordon cousens and mrs leonard bell were among the many who brought antique articles a clever english miniature haystack was made by j r williams assisting in the booth dressed in old fashioned clothing were mae hicken and jean ruddell adding interest to the centennial mo tif were a number of local ladies who dressed in old fashioned clothing and walked around the grounds during the afternoon mrs l w dann wore a beautiful blue velvet gown with match ing hat ail hand stitched a family heirloom belonging to mrs george brown of norval mrs victor diggins and mrs gordon cousens were gowned in replicas of old fashioned costume livestock parade the grand parade of livestock hi front or the grandstand drew many words of praise from the huge crowd which watched it there was a parti culariy fine showing m the sheep and light horse sections and heavy horses were well represented a feature of the parade was a team of ofcen driven by jack devereaux the poultry lawn show expanded- over last year with exhibitors from windsor sarnla hamilton st cath arines and gait as well as surrounding towns in the big tent besides the baby show there were movies by the halton federation of agriculture and an hi terior decorating demonstration by mrs eleanor brown sponsored by the khb simpson co ltd the races as usual thrilled aad theleggette brothers aged ded to the fund for presentation bonds to georgetown s service person nel that the dominion store is getting a face lifting with a special crew from head office renovating the premises that work is about to start on the veterans homes on the highway that the lome scots band is sponsoring a concert ni the arena a week sunday night in aid of the pre sents for georgetown servicemen that vic diggins new plant the georgetown manufacturing company ltd is in operation in the former oneill building on main street that miss laura scott is teaching the primary class at the public school until miss hume returns and that miss geotglna young is teaching miss scotts class what council did on monday september 9th boosted the town employees to four by hiring jack kerr who will start his new job next week gave third reading to the by law for resurfacing year and saying that the exemption could not be allowed ukeat war veteran frank golden dies a well known resident of george town for the past 24 years thomas frank golden died suddenly in chris tie street hospital toronto on satur day sept 7th although he had been in falling health for the past year and had been in hospital for treatment he had been able to be home for awhile he returned to the hospital last thursday and failed to recover from a stroke which he suffered the following day mr golden was born in greenock ontario 8 years ago and was a son of the late mr and mrs thomas gol den he enlisted in the first great war with fhe 86th machine oun bat tery and served in england and france with the 4th battalion a barber by trade he had his shop in the exchange hotel for many years and later had a barber shop beside the legion hall on mui street he was a member of branch 120 canadian legion he is survived by rus widow formerly isabell strauss and four children prank and thomas both of whom ser ved overseas in this war james and margaret he also leaves five sisters mrs jim sullivan mrs pat leonard and mrs regan of windsor mrs wm meyers cargiu and a sister in califor nia and three brothers jack william and james in the west he was pre deceased by one sister mrs thomas mahoney requiem mass was held at holy cross church on tuesday morning with rev fr v j morgan officiating pall message and in the evening rev john nettl a former min jster and now retired preached the sermon in the evening the zlmmer man choir took charge of the music and were very much appreciated beau tlful period mr perrot it a former resident of lindsay movta here recently to take over iwmi of the lome scots band lions will sponsor salvation army campaign major chapman and adjutant wm shaver of the salvation army attend ed the dinner meeting of the lions monday evening the former gave a stirring account of the social services performed by the organization in eluding homes for orphans and elder races there were four horses in the 258 heats and six in the classified races mr charles dick from cleveland ohio won the herald subscription for the person coming the farthest dis tance but eim the men were shy on tbe age question and no one registered as tne oldest attendant at the fair ashgrove mr nd mrs a j ruddell and fam lly attended the wedding on saturday of their nephew howard laidlaw to miss eileen cunnlngton in mayfield united church mr and mrs charles dick and miss carolyn betow of cleveland olio were the guests of mr and mrs c b dick during fair week mr and mrs dick motored with their guesteio bourlamaque quebec where they are visiting dr s m fisher and family misses enid shore and luella rath of toronto spent fair weekend with john and marion hunter most everyone in the mrs james curtis died at her home in barrle and was buried in greenwood cemetery here on tues day august 27th in the family plot her husband woo predeceased her veral years ago was a representative of the singer sewing mnt co when he lived in town and the family attended hory cross church mrs curtis is survived by one son duncan a druggist in timmins a daughter haael died when the fam ily lived in
