mall p office dept ottawa uember of the canadian weekly newspapers association and the ontarioquebec division of the cwna the editors column lets get on with it some people are hard to convince we still hear a few earnest souls talking about what a lot of money has to be raised for servicemen s gifts that they never think it can be done that we should have a gift like a watch or a ring instead of a bond that most of the money will be spent foolishly that we ehouldn t be giving individual gifts anyway but be building a new high school or putting artificial ice in the arena or building a swimming pool or a y m c a or rebuilding the old town hall during the war we talked a lot about everybody putting their shoulders to the wheel and about every one being in the front line that nothing was too good for the boys and that when they came back again wed show how grateful we were etc etc well they are back now and a committee of representative citizens with little expression from the general public as to what type of gift should be made there were no more than ten replies received to a questionnaire inser ted in this newspaper for two weeks has decided that a 50 bond would make a suitable gift as a token recog mtion of georgetown s gratitude added up this makes a considerable sum of money inasmuch as close to three hundred men and women will be the recipients it is a slightly more gen erous gift than some of the surrounding communities have made a good watch costs about 40 but it is not outof theway nor more than a community which boasted of the highest per capita victory loan sales jn all canada should be able to make glen williams norval acton milton erin and the various esquesing township wards have raised money for similar gifts with a tenth of the fanfare and publicity which has been expended in the georgetown campaign let s get on with the job subdue our objections to the majority op inion and not make recognition day a cause for petty bickering and buckpassing it is not to be expected in a democratic commun ity that everyone should think alike whatever the choice there are bound to be some who would prefer an alternative but it is to be expected that when a deci ion is made differences of opinion will not take prece dence over the common cause it is a big thing and yet a very small thing that we are doing if everyone will donate according to his financial ability there will be no difficulty in raising the money june is busting out to borrow from the popular song june is bust ing out all over when it comes to weddings once up on a time june was the traditional bridal month and the great percentage of young lovers just naturally gravitated altar wards nowadays cupid seems to know no season and this week alone we had five weddings to track down for our news columns with at least six that we know of coming up in october trying to think of a logical explanation we have finally decided that cupid like man has adopted the 46hour week and that he just couldn t work all the weddings in for june anymore let s hope the little fellow doesn t ape man any further and decide to go on strike for union security no cupid no weddings and then what would become of newspapermen and clergymen and merchants and taxi cabs and wedding cake makers hockeys in the air we can t recall so much pre season hockey talk in many a year as there is in georgetown today and it looks as if tho john street ice palace will be bulging this winter with the rabid fans who help to make this a hockey town on paper the intermediates are shap ing up a stellar aggregation which will be hard for any one to beat but we won t minimize too much our neigh bouring hamlets of milton and acton which always manage to ice a credijalpe squad 1 he intermediates are also committing themselves to sponsorship of a ju nior o b a entry and the recreational council are planning an even bigger bantam and midget grouping if there are enough juveniles the council is also pre- pard to set up a league for them and we hear that a main street merchant might be interested in sponsoring an o b a juvenile entry while artificial ice is not a possibility for the arena this year there is one thing which we wish the powerstnatbe would secure and that is a time clock and scoreboard our rink admittedly the best in any town tins size would be much better equipped with this xntl jans would get a bigger lock from the games if they had constant check on time and score how about it fteb board and hockey chib in the rose room georgetown arena every saturday night modern and
