office dept ottawa member of toe canadian weekly newspaper association and tne onlvloquebec division of the owjkji the editors column fire plpuevention a daily task though this week is the official fire prevention week in canada fire takes no holiday and neither should any citizen who is interested in saving life and property it is a paradox that without fire we could not live yet it is one of the great destroyers of the mod ern age fire heats our homes and industrial plants it also destroys them by the thousands everv vear fire creates the heat essential to life it also kills hundreds of persons every year last year 39421 residential properties in canada were destroyed or badly damaged a terrible loss when the housing shortage is our greatest national problem we spend millions of dollars everv vear in our firefighting services fire protection and conservation of our timber resources we can make these measures doubly effective by destroying fires at their source by carefully extinguishing matches and cigarettes hav ing furnace pipes and chimneys cleaned checking on defective wiring a small task done today may save you or someone else thousands of dollars in fire loss make fire prevention week more than just a once ayear event dont thank us in our chosen job of issuing a weekly newspaper we need and count on the support of all our readers to make each weeks edition as detailed as possible in re fleeting all the little things that go to make up the life of the community not the least important are those items which appear in our social and personal sec tion- news of visitors m town or visits made by towns people to other localities showers and birthday parties illnesses wedding anniversaries and so on it is not humanly possible for one person to learn all of these without a great deal of help from readers we are often struck by the fact that many people think we are doing them a favour when we print such items about them 3uite the contrary it is you who do us a favour by taking the trouble to stop in at the office or phone and ellutabbut an ttem which will help to fill the columns of the herald we particularly invite some of the newer resi dents of town with whom we are not yet acquainted to give us social news items there is no quicker or easier way to get acquainted in town than by having your xiatne and your news in the paper number please telephone operators and the telephoning public will both be happy to see the new phone book which reached town last week in use we cant remember a year in which there have been so many changes and additions the old book issued in august 1945 had 782 numbers listed while the nev book shows a gain of 87 to make a grand total of 869 you will realize what extra work miss chave and staff have had in an swering the numerous enquiries for new numbers par ticularly when a good percentage of the new users are commercial establishments however at the rate of georgetowns present growth we fear it will be only a brief respite for the hardworking bell office staff for with arrowth comes new demand for telephone service and we expect that the subscribers will number close to the 1000 mark by the time next years book is issued an editorial holiday about this lime of year westart looking forward to education week when students at g h s are in th habit of taking over this column for the week to try their hand at editorial writing it affords the editor a break from the weekly grind and readers n relief from reading the opinions of one person and we think it is good experience for the studepts and goo4 publicity for the school to give the reading public a rhuice to s e what they are thinking about this year as an incentive for the students to do their best we are offering a small prize for the winning editorials details of the prize will be announced at the high school education week coming during the week of november 6th we are reserving the editorial page of that issue qr chs glen
