word of godtopeo pie in a parubular situation and ita relevance to that particular situation is quite clear athens hod been tor centuries the intellectual centre of tbe world but i tbe athens of plato may be sure that judgmenvllas come because god raised this jesus from the dead of course paul was unable to prove to tbe satisfaction of mere human reason that this gospel was true some did believe but tbe majority mocked at the idea of resur rection he was thought a fool by these wise men who met to discuss their vague theories about the onl ine bwww wu wealthy and the powerful it was all there in ochnth these things paul declared to be tbe result of sin sin ners cannot saive themeetvea samuon can come only from a divine source and a drvine redemption alone will suffice tbe atonement of jesus christ provides a way of reconciliation with ood a way of salvation in fact the only way what was true of the situations in athens and corinth in large measure is true of our modern society tbe outlook on life which the majority of people have even the socalled edu cated is essentially frivolous and su pert idal they are agnostic acknow ledging some vague sort of diety be hind the universe even though it cannot be proven rationally and scien tifically they attend churches in fltsl and starts but nave no real christian i iruuh erated into a secondrate debating so- 1 tneir vague uicwm this intellectual crowd considered them selves religious indeed as the revised version puts it paul called them wj j religious but the authorized version has him call them too superstitious the two usually go together hteuglon that is agnostic based on the worship of an unknown ood behind nature can only be superstition and idolatry i secular history bears witness to the decline of philosophy in athens and the picture which acts 17 gives of a company of people who indulged in in tellectual curiosity always hoping to hear somethi new but trusting to human- reason alone to prove the truth of it is quite true they took unavoidable delays hi nthing on estate doe to estate tax ation and the routine of pto- i bate frequently leaye a fam- c ily with little avabame eash for current living expenses slde by side in extremes standards were quite materialistic and there was a love of luxury and a preoccupation with business and politics prom the passage to l cortnttilans which is part i of our lesson text it is quite clear that paul preached here salvation through christ in bis atonement alone the cross which is a stumbling block to the jews and foolishness to tbe greeks it might well be asked what meaning could reconciliation atone y01rstb enjoy yours to protect that some would be awakened to fattti and a lack of moral eiriousness corinth waa a difficult place in which weu as luxury and the power which money supplies the preoccupation with poli tics and business these are charac teristics of our age wbich strikingly resemble those of corinth in pauls time but all our problems flrom whence do they arise do they not arise from our sin before god and to solve them must not man be reconci led to god when one thinks of the vast political educational economic and scientific efforts which are being put forth to bring order out of tine chaos of our world there is deep pa thos in the fact that none of these ef forts can succeed so long as man re mains in sin sinners cannot save themselves from the natural conse quences of their sin nothing can rec tify the ills of the world which does not take into account the radical na ture of sin and the fact that man un- reconciled to god is powerless to de feat it the christian church is not alone in seeing the predicament there is consternation in many quarters today over the trend toward despair and ruin from which mankind is unable to ex tricate itself but tbe church alone knows what can be done and that la to witness to the power of jesus christ from whose hand alone can help come the power which alone can save man kind from spiritual mental and physi cal ruin that does not mean that the jeauttoauyeatq or that the world will be saved from further cala mity and war this witness will cause some to believe but the majority wfq mock out of their shallow and super ficial attitude to life upon these judgment will come but tbe church win have borne its witness that there is no other power under heaven where by men are saved but tbe power of the crucified resurrected and everliving ohrist and that is all it is cornmis sioned to do and when the church is trut to its commission the future can
