furthered next year by a mass xray survey sponsored by the ontario department of health the travelling clinic has visited many ontario municipalities this year and is doing a wonderful job in enabling those who are infected with the disease to learn of their danger and take the proper curative measures the survey ir halton will be paid for from pro ceeds from the sale of christmas seals sponsored by oakville lions club with the endorsement and support of the local lions club dr c v williams and dr r t paul medical officer of health for georgetown and esquesing respectively are both solidly behind the plan two dollars worth of seals have been mailed by the oakville club to every family in this district the amount is not intended to set the contribution and any gift large or small will be appreciated christmas seals have always been sold at this time of year but this year there is a more personal touch to the campaign when one realizes the benefits that will be derived right here in town and district it is a cause which merits your support an auspicious beginning the success which greeted the initial performance of the laff revue last thursday night was more than any of the audience or the cast had anticipated we have heard dozens of people remark that they had ne ver seen an amateur show which ran so smoothly the acting was uniformly excellent the equallyimportant backstage crew did their job efficiently and the whole show would have been a credit to any professional group it goes to prove our contention that a town as small as georgetown has a wealth of theatrical talent and that we are capable of providing entertainment on a par with any offered in the larger centries of popula tion we look forward eagerly to the next show and predict a promising future for the ladies and men whose acting ability was so ably proven in the laff revue a word of praise words are inadequate to express the gratitude of the citizenry for the good work of geotzetown fire brigade and their efficiency and speed in averting what might have been two major fires last week at the pub lic school and mcnallv wood products their speed of arrival and quick action when they arrived at the scenes were in these cases responsible for saving pro perty in the first fire and much of the building con tents in the second it is conclusive proof that george towns volunteer brigade renders the utmost in public service and every member deserves our thanks the high school district we are somewhat alarmed at the action taken last wednesday night at a meeting in acton when the majority representatives of councils and school boards from the district showed themselves in favor of a high school district in north halton and a resolution was passed that each board and council forward a written opinion to the consultative committee not later than december 1 8 we believe that this is asking too much a snap decision in a problem which should take a great deal more time for thought we were not able to be present at the meeting but earlier in the week we had the opportunity of hear ing the plan detailed by mr l l skuce at a lions club meeting mr skuce gave an able presentation of the case and it is hard to pick any flaws in the plan but we are inclined to think that there are more diffi culties in the way of a solution than woul appear in the theoretical presentation contrasts cannot be made with oakville and bur lington where in both cases the plan adopted will mean a bigger school in each community with every rural pupil able to commute by school bus there is no question there of closing any established schools in north halton if the plan is adopted it can mean one of two things closing of all three high schools and construction of a new building at a neutral point or closing of two schoola and enlargement of one of the three present schools to accommodate all the students the advantages of a central school are many diversity of courses a higher standard of teaching through die paying of higher salaries an opportunity for tm rural students to attend high school without the present inconvenience of trsjiaportatkaa a mere cotn- over the wentworth contestants five young people parti- plete athletic program are some which come to mind the disadvantages are perhaps not quite so readily ap parent but are nonetheless present the cultural loss which any community would suffer at the closing of a local high school the absence of all high school chil dren from town for the greater part of the day winter transportation when roads are often blocked the re placing of community school spirit with a county school spirit the question mark and one which might well decide the problem one way or the other is cost and this is something which we feel should be developed much further before any sensible decision can be arri ved at if the new high school were to cost more than to continue the present three schools with their needed improvements then we should say there was no good reason for a change if consolidation could mean a sav ing to the public treasury then we saw go ahead and assuming that majority opinion does favor the district then cost should be the deciding factor m de termining location give yourself a cold wave permanent you can treat yourself to a perfect soft natural looking permanent wave done at home in
