snace be ot tlie editors column more about high schools this last week we have been giving considerable thought to the high school district question we note that the acton editor whose editorial influence extends to both acton and milton by virtue of his publication of the newspaper in both those towns has declared himself a proponent of the plan though he originally was opposed in his joint capacity as editor and school board chairman he can be expected to wield a good deal of influence in both these towns after our own editorial last week in which we tried to present the picture from both sides we had one particularly strong argument presented by a rural resi dent of the norval district whose position in life is such that he should have his finger on the pulse of public opinion he claimed there were mdny parents who would not let their children continue to high school be cause of the lack of transportation and that this factor alone weighed the scales heavily against the rural young person who needed and wanted an education just as badly as the town lad we are still not convinced that to ruh into a threecommunity consolidated school will be the an swer would it not be amuch better plan to first inves ugate the possibilities of having three separate high school districts each one serving its surrounding com munity more adequately by transporting rural students by school bus towns do not just grow by accident each one has through the years reached its present pos ltion because of definite factors of geographical loca tion and each of the three north halton towns is the cultural and business centre for a certain rural area if we are falling down on the job of education and if we can provide a better service to our community which takes in more than the physical boundaries of george town proper then we should start investigating right now and if we find that by bringing our present high school building and its curriculum to the point where it should be and that we can aid rural students to at tend by providing a centralized transportation system then we shall be taking a progressive step forward in education georgetowns community centre we wonder if georgetown folk realize how lucky they are m possessing a town building which is the nu cleus of the recreation centre which every town seems to be talking about these days here we are not faced with t question of spending thousands of dollars to construct such bunding with amimmuirt6tlnoney and a good deal of hard work the old town hall has come out of seclusion this year to show that something carie3otie we4ooltjiextyearto a much fuller use of existing facilities and the addition of others we hope the 1 947 town council will look into the question of providing a central heating plant for the building at present winter activities of the recreation al council are being conducted in the auditorium up stairs with the two downstairs rooms used by the lome scots band and the fire brigade it would seem that one heating system to replace the half dozen stoves now in use would be cheaper and safer and provide much fuller use of the building as mr il who aua3 1u cylinder and transacts severe
