owjtjl the editors column the understanding heart once each year a national appeal is made by the salvation army for funds to carrv on welfare work in the dominion thiayear the num of one million dollars is sought and as as before we in georgetown are asked to contribute our small share of the total not having a gitadel in town our citizens are perhaps not as familiar with the salvation army as are resi dents in brampton and other towns where they have more members their biggest boosters here are war veterans who almost to a man are loud in praise of the work of rhe sally ann in canada and oversea and it is rarely if ever that any criticism is levelled by those in uniform who came in contact with them in peacetime the army carnes on an exten aive program of welfare work it maintains fifteen hospitals 7 1 homes and institutions does much work among prisoners in jails and penitentiaries fresh air camps provide an outing for underprivileged city chil dren maternity homes for unmarried mothers set the feet of mothers and babies along paths that lead to a happy and useful future sunset lodges for elderly ladies and eventide homes for aged men are peaceful havens where old people who have suffered poverty and illness can spend their remaining- years the theme of the campaign the under standing heart is particularly apt for the work of the salvation army a georgetown committee headed by mrs r t paul harold mcclure and dick licata has been set up to accept donations from town citizens and is planning a tag day on saturday october 4th donations to the campaign will be gratefully received by any of the above and a generous support is asked on the tg day sunday entertainment it seems too bad that the efforts of so many in dividual in canada should be directed along what to us seems a relatively unimportant course the deter mmation to give a fundamental interpretation to sun day as a day of rest and to resist anything which might frighten that day we refer to the members of the lord s day alliance who fight to he death any at tempt at sunday sports movies and entertainments the lda has fostered the continuance of antiquated sunday irws which meet favour with a very small minority of the people and we think it is time legisla tion was revised in keeping with current ideas on what to do on sunday in a recent bulletin issued by the alliance the statement is made that lord s day legislation does not attempt to prohibit personal recreation on sundays unless it means the organization of sports on any com mercial basis or the employment of persons on sun days to provide any such recreation it goes on to speak of attempts of bowling alleys and nnks to oper ate on sunday of commercial concessions at summer resorts the holding of hockey basepall and football practices etc ah of which has the aim of having everyone able to enjoy sunday as a day of rest it does not allow that a man who is employed on sunday can enjoy his day of rest on a monday or tuesday and be just as refreshed physically and spiritually with the added satisfaction of knowing he has contributed to someone ejse s rest by providing he means to enjoy it on sunday paradoxically while arguing chat sunday sport and recreation keep people from attending church the 1d a points the finger of scorn at quebec province for not observing the day with the same rigidity as we in ontario it is not necessary to have any figures on church attendance in this predominantly roman catholic province to refute this there are many ways of relaxing and we do not agree with placing too many barriers against a wor icing man enjoying himself during his day off if bow ling or a show or a baseball game is his form of relaxa tion then he should have it and if church attendance u based on the jdea that we 11 have nothing else to conflict with it because that would mean a decrease in church attendance then the clerical members of the 1d a have little faith in what the church has to offer more farm news j e whitelock halton s busy representative of the department of agriculture has added another job to the many he now holds and has offered a week jy agncutural
