editor dear sir it la once again good to see the welcome sign out for emigrants from the old land canada needs them more so the banner province of ontario with its empty acres its vast virgin ttmberlands and its busy cities it took the ingenious mind of pre mier drew of ontario to set the pace foe this new migration with his novel and daring air emigration scheme under this plan over seven thousand of the best of the old lands youth have registered for passage and over one thousand have already arrived midnight dance stanley park pavilion erid erin fair day thanksgiving morning 1205 am fair niht dance monday evening october 13th dancing at 9 p m and are becoming rapidly settled this plan is setting an erample to other pocnlnlons whose waste places cry out for settlement but ontario is leading the van every time a silver sky ship touches down at mahon airport outside tor onto ontario it adds at least forty new canadians to the dominion s twelve millions how different is this to what it was when i came to ontario over fortythree years ago no seven league boots for me which would transport me over the atlantic in less than twentyfour hours it took me eight days to cross and that in a verminridden cattle boat on landing in ontario in the blackness of a cold march night i was met by strangers who filled my hungry stom ach with leftovers and handed me a farm joto at eight dollars a month and keep for five o clock the next day farm work was hard work in those days but it did me no harm i had none of the amenities of this modern age after almost three yean on the land i graduated in turn to bush worker railroad construction hand hod carrier etc etc then newspaperman i that was the acme of my desire after thirtyfive years i am retired on a competence with a home of my own a family happily married a nice garden in which to laze and dream of that faroff day when i shook the dust of the humdrum lancashire textile town from my feet 1 as i said before what a contrast to now air emigrants to ontario land after sixteen hours are whis ked by motor oar to the ray city of toronto and there handed a banquet and a job before they have had time to recover their breath if they cannot make good after that well i wonder what their pioneer forbears would say i george hughes 11q preenlaw ave toronte 10 tton of an open sunday suggests that there are a large number of people who are not religious and do not attend church but who at the same ums are equally as good as those who do it would seem to me that this la beside the point and it would be a very sorry world without the religious influence and while i do not behave in any attempt to le gislate the people into church atten dance i would like to ask those who do not attend or support any place of worship just what would happen if we all fett the same way at a time of sorrow such as a death the clergy are called upon to perform the ceremony of burial and when a wedding or a christening are needed the clergy again are asked to do what is necessary but if these cler gy and the church were not suppor ted by the people who would there be to take over these very necessary duties it would seem to me from some experience that the ones who do least for the church are the very ones who at times of stress are the first to call the clergy as their right and it is time that they woke up to the fact that if we felt we were too good to support the church or to attend its services we would be in a very bad way when it came to marrying or christening or even burial because there would be no o do the necessary services it is time that we realised that the church should be supported by all not only for what it stands for but for the service that it does instead of the way that it is at present supported by the few with the many asking for a service that it has not earned a j morris in a sudden death game against st kits nerval joltaii beed pater fend- ley oordie laldlaw oeorge piper jamie cunningham on
