program on april 31st of this year a large group of halton rural young people came before our county court judge his honor w n munro and during- 1 very impressive- ceremony they were caoh presented with a oertlfl- j eate of canadian citizenship at this time they were publicly recognized as citizens of canada although they had previously assumed this status automatically upon reaching their twentyfirst birthday the ceremony impressed upon them the import- j ant duties privileges and reaponsl- bilitles which they had acquired when they as canadianbom joung people became citizens of a tree democratic country the ceremony was the climax of ft j series of meetings held in three well distributed places in the county and sponsored by the halton junior far mers association at the meetings which were led by very competent instructors these young people stud- led and discussed our systems of federal provincial and municipal government our systems of courts of law taxation and banking and their duties and responsibilities as citi zens each developed a sense of fresh fellowship with the other partlcr- pants as a result of both their study and the social recreation which was organized as a part of each getto gether because this educational project was such an unqualified success the directors of the junior farmers as sociation of ontario an organiza tion comprising more than 8000 members had the programme placed before the annual conference of this organization with the idea that the project be expanded to other counties across the province the executive of the halton junior farmers association hopes that this type of programme can be carried o annually in this county for the bene fit of the new group of young people who come of age each year to discuss the possibilities of a countywide pogramme for the bene fit of both rural and town young peo ple the citizenship committee of the halton junior farmers associ ation met with a very small group representative of some other organis ed bodies in the county this group was composed of mr d m hetkfle and mt hunter keld the rotary club of oakvllle be gordon w porter st pauls church milton mr roy f smith ontario federa tion of home and schools and mr j e whitelocfc ontario department of agriculture milton the group consulted were unanimous in the opinion that such a project would re ceive the active support and cooper ation of most of the organizations in the county and as a result of this the halton junior farmers associa tion has called a meeting to be held in the milton high school the even ing of thursday october 30th at 6 jo there is no doubt that such a pro ject will receive much cooperation from the community programmes division of the ontario depar of education mr norman c xind- aay supervisor of this branch will be on hand to address the meeting and to discuss any proposed project last january the suggestion was made at a meeting of the provincial dlectorate of the junior farmers that in lieu of possible infiltration of non democratic ideals among ttbe youth of our country some definite aggressive programme of citizenship training should be adopted a countywide programme of citi zenship training in halton county would certainly contribute toward maintaining the democratic freedom which we enjoy and cherish so dear painting i decorating industrial home spray
