issued last week by the bell telephone company to georgetown clients tells a story of the steady growth of the community if one cares to spend an hour or two with pencil and pad rvhich is just what your editor did on a recent even ing adding up numbers in the old and new books to arrive- at the conclusion that there are 1 77 more tele- phones in use now than at this period in 1946 num bers in the old book totalled 8j3 and in the new book 1050 if you dont believe it count them yourself of course there is a small margin of error in both ca ses for there are some numbers the herald office in cluded which appear twice in the book and we didnt want to carry matters so far as to start weeding out these which in any case wouldnt be more than a do zen or so the rapidity with which telephone service is expanding is shown by this fact that since the new directory was compiled the list of local subscribers has grown to 1 125 r c adams withno 322 still has the alpha betical edge on other users and appears at the head of the list whue w g young 442 r 21 glen williams is again at the bottom al zeravlev of lincoln auto body will be a cinch for this honour when he finds a house and moves to town tile business community has taken a greater in terest in advertising in the directory and there are 80 who have taken small displays with their phone listing and 31 listed in blackface type last year these figures were 67 and 26 x in numbers harry goldhams butcher shop re tains no j bua bell of georgetown clay products ias no 2 and town clerk p b harrison no 3 high est o fthe town numbers is 534w which belongs to the new baptist minister rev charles gower it is always interesting to see what names are most common in a community and in georgetown die thompsons have the telephone lead with 16 the wilsons are second with 1 3 and browns third with 1 2 next in line are hill and smith 10 hunter 9 barber and leslie 8 clark cleave norton scott 7 arm strong bell bradley campbell graham hilts mc donald robinson sinclair wright have half a dozen listings each rank is not a factor there will be very few who disagree with the de cision of the council to eliminate mention of tank from the new memorial tablet on the and from the list of names of those who lost inthe two world wars which is rehearsed eacii year at the remembrance day service rank whip must of necessity be important on the battlefield rats no parti cular significance in civilian life and most assuredly has no place in distinguishing the sacrifice of those who did not come home john doe whether he be private or general shared equal danger took the same risks and in the case of those whom we honour on re membrance day made the greatest sacrifice possible his life and on all days we should think of him as john doe and not as pte doe or sgt doe or colonel tax sources neglected l in these days ofc rising costs of municipal govern ment due to the general increase in prices and wages and such specialized projects as a sewerage system and artificial ice in the arena it might be well for our town fathers to investigate tax sources which up to the pre sent have been neglected one field which might yield a few extra dollars is that of business tax at the pre sent time retail businesses which occupy strictly busi ness premises pay a moderate tax based on foot fron tage but there are many who operate businesses from their own homes who escape this tax an amendment to the municipal act this year overcomes the loop hole by providing that anyone occupying or using land in connection with such a business may be assessed for business tax another matter which has come before council from time to time is that of outsiders who com to m and do a considerable volume of business with ho revenue to or no control by the municipality there fe no reason why these gentlemen should not contri bute a share to the town which provides them not only with a mass market but with sidewalks on which to v wlk roads on which to drive fire and police protec- tfdtt lor their products and vehicles the hawkers and i act is used by the county town milton to eist fee for a trading licence from these and could fused here too pal politics to the fore t is here and with it comes the first stir- bunicipal politics it is the month when is held when present office hol ders seek reelection or- retire from public life as the case may be and when rumour has this that and die other new face appearing j ne local political scene for the benefit of newcomers to town who may not be familiar with small town affairs we offer a few facts which will put them straight georgetowns council is elected annually and its nine members comprise the mayor the reeve the deutyreeve added for the first time last year when the town reached the requisite number of voters and six councillors the first three offices are by general election and councillors are elec ted two from each of the towns three wards the reeve and deputyreeve also sit on county council in milton where they represent georgetown in the broa der field of county government nomination meeting will be held in the public li brary on friday november 21st from 7 to 9 pm dur ing this time names properly moved and seconded may be submitted to town clerk p b harrison who acts as returning officer jf a candidate is nominated for more than one office he must signify before 9 pm which office he intends to contest otherwise he is jud ged to be seeking the office for which he was first no minated v following the official nomination meeting it is customary for a public meeting to be held procedure here is for the chairman to introduce the various coun cil members each of whom reviews the work of his committee during the year and the mayor who gives a resume of accomplishments during his tenure as chief magistrate candidates who are not sitting mem bers of council are then invited in turn to take the floor and any voter present has the pisvjlejje both of questioning any speaker or of making a speech on his own such meetings follow no set pattern some years the meeting has a large attendance as it should always have and some years only a handful of voters are there some years debate is keen and others it is cut and dried and often on the dull- side sometimes members of the council put some thought into their speech and other times they merely throw a few gen- ralities together whatever line the meeting follows we would re mind every taxpayer that it is his democratic duty to attend this meeting this is the place to praise or criti cize to ask questions of those who have despatched town business and of those who seek to do so in i 948 any voter who does not attend has no right to criticize later on if he has not attended this meeting teuect must play its part in the ser vice of christ so today the chrls- tlan must study to understand the great doctrine of christianity chap 4 of 1 peter verses 1 to 6 give a vivid illustration of the ten sion between the christian and the world as it works out in actual so cial persecution peter makes it clear that he writes to people who not long before had shared in the unmoral practises and customs of a pagan society 43j these things had been renounced when they be came christian but their former friends and associates irked not only by their withdrawal but also by the adverse judgment implied by the wthdrawal make repeated effort to win them back to the old ways false accusations are directed ag ainst them which are believed by the credulous ixjpulace and in social and business circles life is made well nigh impossible as we know from historical records christians were treated much the same as jews were treated ki nazi germany peter admonishes tha christian to remain firm that those who thus suffer have the proof that they nave cea- sed from sin 4 1 they are to arm themselves with the same mind that was in christ as he faced crucifixion and to remember that it is not strange that they should be thus treated it is only natural that the world which crucified christ should also treat them cruelly they must 1 suffer crucifixion with christ and i ore called to give account to no mani only but to christ who is ready to judge the quick and the dead 4 5 the same sort of thing is pictured in the words that st augustine used of roman society in- his day whaj concerns us they the pagans say is that everyone should be able to increase his wealth so that he can afford a lavish expenditure last there be gorgeous palaces and sumptuous banquets where anybody can play and drink and gorge him self as much as he pleases let the man who dislikes this be re garded as a public enemy and if he tries to interfere let the mob hound him to death we may well ask ourselves if there isnt sufficient resemblance between the viewpoint pictured by peter and st augustine and the world today to make us realize that a pagan so ciety in any age is likely to resent those who refuse to share its stan dards certainly there exists today the weather mr editor october hvwbfns to the toronto telegram it will be long days of social persecution axe not past by any means as that ten sion increases as it must increase there are several other points at which this tension exists whlctk mlght be mentioned peter mentions and so does st augustine the factor of excess drinking as a feature of paganism certainly in our day it is at this point that christians en counter the resentment of those who would wish to have no interference with their right to do aa they please certainly the brewing and distilling industries which bend ev ery effort to reach their objective of more drinkers drinking more re sent the attitude of those who re nounce t pagan practice two other points at which tension exists are the attitude towards the use of the sabbath and the attitude of tba christian towards the practise of gamhiing the reader may trilr of others a in thes days when lines of demar cation are being drawn sharply christians must as in the day of peter gird up the loins of their minds and be sober setting their hope without doubt or wavering up on the grace that has come at the re velation of jesus christ o the word turnpike originated from the early custom of blocking toil roads with pikes until the toll was paid the sunday school lesson by rev r c todd a call to bight living lbbson- 1 peter 11333 415 the first epistle of peter was writ- 1 ten in the midst of the persecution of christians it was probably writ ten from rome by peter while he i was awaiting trial by the emperor neros courts it should be read against a background of persecu tion partly of that launched and dl- rected by the roman government but mostly of that social persecution i carried out by the pagan populace it is obviously addressed to conver ted gentiles who up to the ttzne of their conversion were ignorant of high moral standards such as those with which jews were familiar 114 and 16 these bad been re deemed from the vain conversa tion more properly translated vain j tr of living handed down by j custom by christ this lesson continues the idea the tension which characterizes the relationship between the chris tian and the world which formed a part of last weeks lesson peter sets in sharp contrast those whose beha viour reflects the low and pagan j standards of morality which indivi duals receive by tradition from the social order in which they live with those who seeing the holiness writ ten out in the life of christ the liv ing word of ood undertake the building a like holiness into 4helr own lives he calls upon these con- verted pagans to give expression to this holiness in every part of life in every part of human experience and living lis 16k when the author ized version was translated the word conversation in verse ib was the term used for general deport ment or behaviour according to pe ter and he is in line with the gen- enl teaching of the scriptures the fallal division between sacred secular in human behaviour must be eliminated peter points out however that the j building into the christians life af the holiness of christ does not de pend upon his own unaided effort he begins with the fact that the converts have been delivered already from the dominion of sin by the sac rifice of christ 11819 the prac tical result of calvary to the belie ver is that our faith and hope might be in ood 121 while a high moral standard is set before the christian his hope and help la not j in a moral standard bit in the grace that is brought unto you at the revelation of jesus christ while christians are to discipline themselves morally they must also discipline their thinking where fore gird up the loins of your mind i 113 the christian ought to think his faith through so far as he can not because faith is wholly an intel lectual mnttat but because the in- directory a- e lepagt
