al wednesday evbnmf decaubt 31st 1947 to all our friends ceorge cleave again esquesing reeve as council acclaimed no township election this year council favours wider roads shallow ditches weed control discussed o at a wellattended nomination meeting in limehouse memorial hau on monday afternoon the en tire esquesing township council were reelected by acclamation council members for 1948 wiube reeve george cleave deputy- reeve george currie and council lors wilfrid bird h craig raid and george leslie the three re- tiring trustees of school area no 1 were also reelected by acclama tion each for a two year term i john bingham harry hunter and harold webster only other nom inee for office was a former coun cillor r n brown who was pre sent the meeting and declined to cause an election by allowing his name to stand reeve reviews year beeve george cleave spoke first at a public meeting which followed for which township clerk isaac bennett was chairman mr cleave gave a detailed account of his ste wardship during 1947 pointing out such major projects as the remodel- hng of the township hall at stew- arttown the cutting down of the 7th line hill near ballinafad and 4he purchase of new road equip- ment he said that snow removal rhai been a major item and the 14000 cost was over twice that of the previous year it was unfortu nate that so much money had to go down the drain but keeping town- ship roads open was of primary im portance and the money bad to be pent mr cleave said that be favoured the idea with which other town ships have been experimenting of widening roads from fence to fence with shallow ditches and high grad ing this he believed wcfuld have the triple advantage of safer roads for traffic easier snow re moval and better weed control later in the meeting w o brownridge queried the reeve about the lack of weed control and mr cleave said that it was a very diffi cult problem entailing scarce lab our and high expense it would cost at least two mills to spray all township roads and there was no guarantee that spraying would be effective he asked for information about the date of erection of the original township hall at stewarttown as council wished to put this date on the cornerstone of the remodelled building small surplus shawn treasurer k- c lindaay reviewed the financial statement which sho wed an estimated s235 surplus sheep claims had taken a marked drop this year from 1300 to 208 snow plow and bnluetw do deputyreeve george currie re ferred humorously to a remark by the georgetown deputyreeve tha he had helped the georgetown reeve do nothing at county council last year and said if that were the truth tfcai had been his job too he was particularly gratified that the coun ty was taking definite reforestation steps and had purchased another property hut year to bring the to tal owned by the county to 700 ac re he said that he understood the sttow plow and bulldozer ordered two years ago were to arrive the next day and with such equipment available he anticipated no serious road block this winter laua favon wu reada cr george leslie spoke strongly la favour of wider roads and shal low ditches tlie new bnudoter he thought could be utilized for road vtttkung brush removal and partial eontrol of the weed nuisance which is becoming more acute as a new bvuaeulo he had been grateful doj- the guidance offered by bis wo tftpsrlov sad while council bad un- there were none of these which werent badly needed youth should servo speaking as the youngest counj tfce lato miss etta ciaridge in the cil member cr craig reid sfiid he m husinesa which thev oon- funeral today for miss jennie ciaridge a private funeral service was held this afternoon at the mcclure funeral home for miss jane jen nie ciaridge who passed away at her home on charles street on mon day evening she had been seriously ill for several weeks a lifelong resident of george town she was associated with her sisters miss roselle ciaridge and believed younger people should take more interest in municipal affairs and not leave it to their dads and grandads or eventually there would be no one trained for the work he spoke of the norval juniors of which he is a raember as a potent factor in training young people for important jobs in the future weed control discussed cr wilfrid bird said that after bo many speeches there was little left for htm to add he too discus sed weed control and the cost fac tor of two mlls to spray the 130 miles of roads in esquesing decline nominatioq r n brown who declined his nomination for council said he thought the township should be div ided into two wards at present there were no councillors from the northern section and he did not think that fair to residents of this area he criticized work on the 7th line hill and said another 11000 in improvements was necessary be fore the job would be satisfactory at present earth is rolling down from the cut onto the road and a guard rail has sunk to almost road level school area has 6000 surplus harry hunter retiring chairman of school area no 1 gave a fuh report of the twoyear old hoard which administers ten school rooms a serious problem is arising in both glen williams and norval schools with heavier enrolments each year he wondered if it would not be possible to have some chil dren transported dailv to smaller schools rather than add teachers and more accommodation at the two lar ger schools which would eventually have to be done answering a query by a stewarttown ratepayer about lack of water at that school he said that the board bad tried but there seemed to be no source of supply the board has a 6000 surplus at present but this could soon be used to meet further improvements and rising coste he said teachers salaries were increased last year the minimum rising from 1200 to 1600 largest salary paid is 1700 other board members speak two other school trustees walter linham and hector bird were pre sent and spoke briefly mr linham said the purpose of the schod area i to give equal educational reppor- tunity to every child he doesnt favour any little red schoolhouse but does favour the idea of the consolidated high school ft millinery business which they con ducted for twentyfive years in the premises above the herald office pfciojto this she was associated with the local dry goods firms a business block in cornwall the day before christ mas the fire believed to have started in a paint shop raged for ten hours before it was checked by the cornwall fire brigade assisted l firemen from messina new york across the st lawrence -ri- at a meeting in the old town hall last night rules of the grc juvenile hockey league which this year will be sponsored by interested merchants were revised main change was the abandoning of a wideopen system whereby each sponor would scout and sign his own players for a pool arrangement from which sponsors will pick their players in a rotation system the change was made by the re creational council because it was felt the original plan had not met with support from either players or sponsors only fourteen juvenile hockey aspirants had registered to date and only one sponsor had definitely indicated bis willingness to enter a team by signing players proudmg enough players register by the january 6th deadline at least a four team leap lie seems assured with the possibility of one or two more entries rev j l self who represented norval at the meeting said the neighbouring village was definitely interested and while they had entered a team in the omha countj league favoured withdraw ing for the more local competition however norval could only muster even home brews and the rest of their team would have to come from local plaven an arranjriment was made where by norval could have a choice in the first two draws for pool pla- yct then drop out of the draw un til the ninth round in order to give thorn a fair deal in team selection while unaware of glen williams intentions a similar proposition would be available for them durinp the season an allstar team w il be picked from players in the league to compete in omha play- dows
