asd tfeav ontario quebec division ol tha c wjna j the editors garner it could be done the planned buildingof lindilicll by thr lions club in the park bnngs forth an idea which has been jelling in the minds of several publicsprrited citizens for some time georgetown as we all know possesses one of the finest natural parks in ontario a soacious area which contains plenty of room for all types ot recreation a beautiful wooded section n stream as well as a grandstand and the armouries up to the pre sent maintenance of the grounds has been an increas- ng problem with the town men busv with other work there just doesnt seem to be enough time tor them to spend on the park the track takes a great deal of time to put in shape for such events as motor cycle races and the tall tair and the smaller but equal ly important jobs of grass cutting field levelling etc have often to be postponed the idea is being propounded that the park be turned over to a board similar to that which controls the arena this board with a grant from the town and with income derived from renting park facilities on certain occasions cpuld take charge of things and over a period of time provide better facilities for summer sport an arrangement of mutual benefit for instance could be made between the board and the ball club just like that between the parks board and the hockey club while revenue from baseball does no at the pre sent time come anywhere near that from hockey im provements in the park would make better baseball games and in time would draw more spectators private groups such as the fall tair lions club legion pipe band etc who use the park on occasion for money- raising activ lties should be willing to donate some share of these proceeds for park maintenance and would in turn benefit the organizations and the town by helping to maintain a wonderful natural asset the logical group to undertake the project would be the georgetown recreational council a function ing body which uses park facilities extensively and could use tlietrrevcnniotdrenrnhttetrhape hr is suggested that the town council should consider the matter and take it in hand as they did so successful ly a few years ago with that other- great recreational facility the arena an important meeting by the time most readers are perusing this col umn the results of an important meeting tonight be tween the recreational council and the town council will be known and the town will either have the pre sent g r c functioning with a clearer understanding of their status or the recreational program will have been dumped in councils lap to seek their own solu tion rumours of a- mass resignation of the g r c came as rather a surprise last wednesday when on the surface all had been sweetness at tuesdays council meeting when chairman e v maccormack presented a detaded andjextremely interesting report of g r c activities since that bodys inception the report ap pears in full in this issue or the herald and is a compre hensive picture of the successes attained and difficul ties experienced in two and a half years of existence 1 he report presented at cduncils request seemed to find favour with a majority of the council and was apparently the beginning pf a clearer understanding by that body of problems encountered by a gr6up of pub licspirited men who have giveji freely of thenhirjjeto develop an idea which has had the encouragement or jhe provincial government both morally and hnan- joially the jhreat of resignation carne af tei the tneeting when members of the grc resented the fact that council failed to grant their request for votes of confl- deuce in the g r c and m the recreational director and fell that this was thcjasjblowirt a scries of set backs later reflection was that a more sensible alti tude- would be to go to council and itemi26 a number of things which the g r c considered essential to a continuance of a recreational program foremost of these is the proper heating of 1 een town hall which is the nucleus of winter activities choosing and equip ment of a suitable office for the recreational director and a proper control bv the g r c over the portion of the old 1 own hall which has been re converted from n run down unused room to a bright useable public hall i he outcome of tonight 3 meeting will have a far- reaching effect on future organized recreation in town it will mean either a continuance of a permanent group which will work to further recreational a nvities par ticularly among the young people or a nlurn to spas modic organising for this or that activity which flouri shes briefly then dies with the removal of its sponsors it is to be hoped that agreement will be reached be tween the two groups to continue providing what should be an essential part of our legacy to youth the development of clean healthy bodies in conjunc tion with active healthy minds pot pourri speaking somewhat cryptographically the acton free press refers to the georgetown council report herald june 2 of the discussion on th- high school district and says by now all will realize how far from fact the conversation drifted the actonmilton pub lisher is bound on making a lastditch stand for a spey- side school we would judge the weather mans wife breaks into print this week with the an nouncement that mrs em batkin designed a prize- winning hat for the womens institute district
