division of the cwn a i lesue m clark corey harrington jr the editors corner wat er situation serious j1ie attention of alt georgetown wattr users is drawn to the serious situation existing at present at the reservoir it was reported pn monday by the town foreman that the water level at thesilvercreek reser voir had dropped fe feet the situation was viewed with much concern and town officials ordered that immediate steps be taken to curtail all unnecessary use of the water supply special attention was drawn to those using gar den and lawn hose and the continued use of these has been prohibited notices have been placed in all parts of the town and official notice has been broadcast by sound truck that those found using unnecessary water will have the source of supply cut off citizens are urged to cooperate to curtail the use of wbter as much as possible until the emergency is past and reserves are replaced 1 he low water pressure coulctbe a menace to the whole community should a fire break out and in view of this fact alone one can realize the seriousness of the whole situation getting ready for fair time with thermometer hovering around 90 in the shade and the hot sultry days of july upon us it hardly seems time to be writing a fall fair editorial but it takes many weeks to plan for the annual fair day and the directors of the esquesing agricultural society are now busy lining up a program for your enjoyment the fall fair is 6ne institution that seems to have weathered the times and has come through good times artdlean down through the many long years but this has not come by chance it has been through the ser vice this institution has rendered to the community and the farmers of the district the fall fair is the show win dow of the community where mrs jones vies with mrs smith for the bebt pickles and mr jones span of horses gives those of mr smith a run for their money it is through this quiet competitive spirit that the best baking the best livestock the art etc is brought out and the standards of the community life held high so when you are asked to support this great agricultural institution by your exhibits by your pres ence at the fair and by your donations keep in mind the service the fall fair is trying to render to your town very few towns would ike the thought of being with out a fair in fact more and more places are realiz ing this and new fair boards are being set up from time to time until now there are nearly three hundred operating in ontario alone i stay off the tracks last week we had a visit from constable markle of the cnr investigation department he was a very friendly chap but seemed to have a problem on his mind he was worried about the number of boys and girls playing on the railway tracks he didnt want to see accidents happen to these boys and girls nor did he want to see serious accidents caused by thoughtless boys who destroy light signals and do damage gener ally around railway property he wanted us to help him out and warn these lads about the seriousness of their acts the breaking of signal lamps etc could cause untold loss of life both to trainmen and passen gers and no one would want to see this happen so the best warning we can give to parents is to keep your children off the track it is for their own safety and the safety of others constable markle would have liked to address the children at the schools but it is holiday time so he has forwarded us a copy of the address he usually gives to boys and girls and we print it here with the hope that boys and girls in georgetown will benefit from his timely warnings today i am going to take you on an imaginary trip along the railway tracks i will point out to you the hidden dangers that lurk along every foot of the shin ing steal rails as we approach the railway crossing we see a large white sign with black letters reading do not trespass this means you boys girls and adults trespassing is punishable by a law several weeks ago the guelph mercury carried these headlines tumbles under tram youngster loses ileg condition said fair 6 year old victim dragged 20 ft suffered poor night at hospital this unfortu nate little school boy had his right leg severed from his body when he fell under the wheels of a moving freight bain while trying to cahdb a ride on the side of a freight car on his llray to school tbe little boy was vwy brave and except for a few whimpers shed no i on his trip to the hospital this could happen to you if this little boy had used the sidewalk instead of the railway tracks he would be running and playing this summer as we stop at the crossing to let a train pass we see an uutomobile racing to get over the crossing ahead of the tram 1 he signals are heralding the approach of n train the crossing bell is ringing red lights are flash ing but the car roars tovvard the crossing what hap pened three people killed no matter what you drive bicycle or tricycle look both ways before you cross a crossing while at the crossing we see a boy riding his bicycle along the tracks 11ns boy did not hear the tram behind him when ke did it was tdo late he was seriously injured imd is still regretting his short cut along the tracks on his way to school before we leave the crossing we notice two railway employees who have been repairing switch lamps atid replacing insulators these have been broken by a group of thoughtless children who were caught and made to pay f6r the damage i best- two pieces of railway equipment are very esselituil to v the proper ftperadojrt of railway service fr as we near a wooded slope we see a small gaso line rail car approaching we slop and there are two large stones on the rails we shout a warning to the man on the gas car who aeest the stones in time to re move them and prevent the derailment of his gas car and possible injury to himself as we cross our wooded slope we come to the old swimming hole here we see our favourite diving board and floit there is not a cripple m the crowd i hey do not play around the railway will vou all pledge to stay off the railway tracks and if you have any smaller brothers or sisters use oui superior knowlt dge to ki i
