of course we left home with every intention of doing all kinds of work including writing this column but here it is monday morning and we take pencil in hand for the first time queer too how a weeks layoff can cramo ones pen manship and we wonder if the linotype department will be able to decipher the hen scratches on the copy pad speaking of loafing on the beach we cant think of a lovelier place to do same than at any of the north ern lake huron resorts being a bruce countyite may have biased us but inverhuron beach is just what the doctor ordered a clear expanse of sand too heavy for automobile traffic clear blue water though much too cold on occasion for swimming cottages set in cool spots among pine and cedar combine to make a vaca tion just what ij should be a week of complete mental and physical relaxation pot pourri a word of thanks to the herald staff for turn ing out last week s paper it was a particularly heavy job with harold davison away on acation and reg broomhead off the statt he having accepted a new job with the brampton conservator another business change is pending on main street we under stand do you realize how lucky we are in georgetown to have five first class restaurants catering to our appetites don t believe any town of similar size could have a higher standard of quality with the threatened railway strike called off bruce county heaved a collective sigh of relief the special tram from the west was due to leave the day after the itrike deadline and a strike of even a few days dura tion would have seriously affected the reunion plans for a clear and concise account of the berlin crisis readers are referred to the week before last issue of time magazine tiie magnitude of russias attempt to starve million of people into submission to communist domination is worthy of hitler at his worst it is to be hoped that russia can learn to be a good neighbour before the world comes to the brink of a third world war note in the acton tree press that work has started on the new addition to the high school there which makes us wonder what has happened to the meeting which was to have been held with georgetown school board the school area board and council representatives from all north haltoi municipalities the meeting was called off when sev eral outoftowners could not attend andvto date there has been nor further news the lions garden party andlucky draw last thursday was one of the most successful projects yet attempted by george towns service club and provided a good nucleus for the bandshell fund a word of praise we pass on a word of praise to memljers of branch 1 20 canadian legion for the excellent job of cleaning up the park after the july 1st calibration town foreman alf collins and his staff were pleasant ly surprised to find everything in good order and it ir to be hoped that this will set the pattern for future events in the park the suggestion has been mad that any organization planning to use the park should ap point a cleanup committee to supervise this work at the present time the town men are overloadi d with extra work due to sewerage installations and increasing water services and there just isnt time for tin m to knbek off important jobs for a day to clean up the park the cleanup committee incidentally could do another job which has been a pet peeve of this column take down posters which are put up to advertise an event rather than to let them gradually disintegrate on hydro poles over a period of several months there is nothing more depressing than to see a number of pos ters in various stages of decay hanging depressingly to advertise an event which has long since passed into his- tpny- an evening melody ashgrove by hill taylor framed in a window across pie way was a man
