recorwreaking crowd spell success for and the fair had kll three clement n ar juiy enterprise abundance a goo waa bmured rhen entries for hall exhibits began pouring in in vu m and kept thr dirrrtom a their assist- friday the m anu busy all day arranging them in the armouries baking particularly hit a standard not equalled since before the war and all branches of ladies work had in- creased nurrsers of exhibitors the horse show is spo- aeu of by those who know as being superior to any yet en this year the cne and london fair not excep ted and the harness races were as usual thrilling and exciting the appearance of a trickruling tno was a particularly fine addition to the grandstand show and rgfrve the crowd their moneys worth with their mastery ol the riding art the baby show was bigger and better than ever the merchants displays more extensive than any year yet and the midway on a par with anything one could xpect at a small town fair a1aif5bnlyargoodas its directors and president john bird secretary garfield mcgilvray treasurer perc cleave lady president charlotte mccullough and their numeroui associates are to be congratulated on aeir handling of a wonderful fair fair sidelights in case anyonothinks bob ireland ran into trouble with a gatecrasher we can tell you that our genial bank of commerce manager was having trouble with an ulcerated tooth which accoun ted for his lopsided facial expression there are always suckers or so it must appear to the lady who was selling welcome ribbons for 25c the rib bons are worth all of a cent apiece and of course had no connection with the fair whatsoever mid way prices were reasonable and we particularly noted die lowprice of pony rides which were offered at a dime jack wilsons hamburgers were popular and he was sold out early in the afternoon the usual quota of lost articles included a pair of glasses and a ten dollar bill an extra orchid to the directors who after a busy saturday turned out on sunday to strip the hall and clean it up many fairgoers were disappointed when the leggette broth ers and their ponies from oshawa failed to put in an appearance but the trick riding act compensated for this an industrial loss a pall of gloom seemed literally to hang over the town last thursday as news spread like wildfire of the impending closing of the lower paper mill while we cannot share the pessimism of some who look on it as a blow from which the town will never recover at the same time the seriousness of the situation cannot be minimized ttite mill employs 80 people twenty of whom can be absorbed at present in other company plants according to a company announcement this meansjhat atjeast fortyjdflthepresenlejaaployeeajmill be looking for work here or elsewhere and the twenty who will remain with the company will possibly be moving to other towns where provincial maintains mills it is unfortunate that at the present time the lo- cal labour market seems to be fairly well filled al though all industries will be doing everything in their power to give available jobs to local residents there is bound to be a shifting in population though and wo will be losing some good citizens who must go where the work is we trust that some new industry may be interes ted in locating in the mill premises which will be vac ant by the yearend no doubt the company itself will bejooklng for a new tenant and at the same time we look to the board of trade to be doing everything in itsyowerjo induce another manufacturer to locate here and take advantage of the present labogr supply before it is scattered among other towns baby shout entries qverfiftyat fair a new high wan set in entries in go along- with the pie tea the annual baby show at toe fall and old fashioned homemade taste fair
