we are at times too inclined to criticize men in public life who give their services gratia or for a small remuneration which does not reimburse thlerri for the effort expended in every town there are men who feel it their duty to serve in some public capacity and it is well that certain individuals are 30 inclined other wise where would we get our town cpuncils school boards hydro commissions recreation councils lib- rary boards and other such groups the same goes for semiprivate organizations such as churches lodges r service clubs and unions each must be headed by an executive and each executive must have a fair share of support else the strength of the organization is weakened any man or woman who seeks office or has it thrust upon him must of course realize his decisions are open to criticism and must be prepared to be the subject of critical comment however this criticism should be constructive and we have no sympathy for those who would tear apart with no suggestions as tp how to put together in a better form honest criticism is always welcomed by broadminded men in public life and their decisions can be aided by other thinking citizens who do not agree with some a their decisions town councils particularly when they are faced with several large and expensive decisions as the geor getown councils of the past four or five years are per haps the butt of more destructive criticism than any other groups from time to time people ore heard to sav what a bunch of spendthrifts we nave on council or why doesnt council do something about this or that the very people who criticize expenditures are the ones who speak loudest about poor roads or lack of better educational facilities their criticism is not tem pered with thought which would produce concrete sug gestions as to how these improvements could be made or how money could be saved hie recreational council and the parks board are two other groups which have had theii share of destruc tive criticism also and in lesser degree one could cite every public group in town let us think before we talk in the future let us be prepared to serve in public office or if this is impos sible to at least attend a few meetings of an organiza tion and find out how it functions before we make free with our criticism and let us remember at all times that man is but human and allow a fair measure of error without expecting perfection in every decision a wise decision announcement by the board of parks that admis sion to the arena in the evenings for skating or hockey games will be barred to children under 12 unless they are accompanied by their parents will meet with gen eral approval from the public the parks board has always been troubled with the problem of unsupervised juveniles who are a nuisance around the building and a worry to boad members who do not feel their job calls for them to be baby sitters many instances are on record of people leaving their young children at the arena while they take in a show or a bingo game do some shopping or have a drink at the pub it is not the proper thing to do and the boards action is in itself a protection for these parents who unthinkingly leave small children at a time when they should be in the care of a grownup the board has one rider to the decision which is that for organized minor hockey under the grc or other competent supervision the new regulation does not apply it also reminds the public that free skating is planned for georgetown public school chil dren on tuesday thursday and saturday afternoons the cooperation is asked of parents not to allow their children to go alone to the arena in the evenings and of grownups who might be tempted by a sad little face saying take me into the game mister it is the one way in which juvenile delinquency can be ifip- ped in the bud for children who are allowed too much freedom in their formative yeajrt ore those who are hard to curb in later life whats your beef loo late for publication last week came 1 beef from councillor cecil davidson which ties in with one of last weeks editorials and also with lie above during the past year he says i have come to the conclusion that there must be at uiht a million cit izens in georgetown judging from tin- number of sug gestions comments and complaints received however dta tho basis of attendance at nomination meetings the tawn population seems to be ubout thirty or forty ji therefore mr editor my beef it why dont thc people of georgetown attend these nomination meet ings in hundreds and take the opportunity to discuss and hear discussed all matters- pertaining to town busi ness every citizen lie he ratepayer or tenant is wel come in fact urged to ntteiid potpourri the santa claus parade in toronto on saturday drew its usual quota of georgetown children while ueveral made the trip to guelph where this jovial gen tleman also put in an appearance under- the aponsor- ship of guelph junior board of trade his friends here are- happy to see bobgoldham bak n his regular defence position with chicjagd black hawks this year bob had two nasly arm breaks which interfered with liis ptoferisiomd career th last late m the seuson last yea when chicago was fighting for u playoff berth lots of hockey in storcuritil the end of thisycar with fle foundation of the 4titim preseasdh league which will play doubleheaders twice weekly in geor getown with no hockey to report in milton how will ravin ross put in the winter never realized how the scene changes in town residents every year un til we begirt the annual chore of printing the voters list there are hundreds of chahges to make this year including the inclusion of 44 voters in the churchill crescent housing subdivision in ward i no radical changes in council for next year are predicted this year so far we have only heard of one new man who might seek office in ward i and no member of the 1948 council has officially given notice that his hat will not be in the ring this friday night will tell the story i he lions christmas tree is planned for saturday december 18th this year with the usual goodies for the children lucky draw tickets will be on sale this week for the grand raffle on doll and fowl anyone who reads more than one toronto newspaper these days is somewhat bewildered about who caused the hydro crisis and why sometimes we wish the political leaders would get together with the dally editors and discuss the future rather than the past i hose who relnember robb richardson who was teller at the bank of commerce a couple bf years ago will be interested to know that he has enlisted in the royal canadian navy the new commun ity hall at stewarttown is filling a real need for the people of esquesing
