newspapers associations and the nf indian ontario quebec cdvslon of th cwn jv the ditbr corneir opening the bandstand j those who have already seen the new bandstand in the park agree that it is a fine addition to the park and a worthy replacement for the old judges stand of which time and the weather has taken its toll the new lions bandstand will be officially opened on june i oth when a gala night is planned with the purpose of rais ing funds to send the georgetown girls pipe band to new york city in july when they will be a feature of the lions international convention the girls with the assistance of club members have been busy selling tickets in a number of lucky drawprizes donated by georgetown merchants the lome scots band will be one of the features of the evening along with rileys entertainers assembled by a lion who is much in demand as a masterofccremonies riley brethour another feature of the evening is the simmons jewel lers diamond ring draw the pipe batnd have been asked to new york as a special feature of the canada show which is being staged in anticipation of the election of a canadian as president of the lions international lions clubs of the district are putting up half the funds necessary to send them there and the june i oth event is staged fo com plete the financing it is a great honour for george town to be so prominently represented at this big ev ent and the girls and their leader roy magloughlen are to be congratulated on the honour wjiich is theirs cleaning up main street in a recent report by the town foreman in which he said his department was going to concentrate this year on keeping main street cleaner he recommended the placing of waste containers at certain places in the downtown district these are particularly needed in front of restaurants and at the theatre and it is hoped that his suggestion will be implimented with town finances stretched to the limit it would be a worth while contribution from the merchants who are at pre sent forming an association to include this in their plans for the future main street during the summer months is often a disgrace and one cannot ask the public to cooperate in keeping it clean unless some means of waste dispos al is provided it would be utopian to expect that con tainers would completely solve the problem but they would help and in time the public could be educated to use them more and more merchants at the same time when sweeping their walks could collect the acc umulated dirt and place it in the containers rather than umulatcd dirt and place it in the containers the stayathome camp the recreational commission and lions club are to be congratulated on their plans for a stayatl ionic camp this summer for georgetown children it will fill a need long felt in the community for organized recrea tion during the summer months for the children of the town and under capable leadership will be beneficial to the children who attend there is no end to the number of things which can be attempted in such a program the local ministerial association will coop erate in giving bible training to the children in the mornings and there are plans for sports hikes craft work and possibly swimming excursions jto nearby pools among others the project will be one which will cost some money and while no appeal to the pub lic for funds is planned we know the two groups would be appreciative 6f any donations which publicspirited citizens might care to give catching up the editor took a few days off from work before the may 24th holiday and in the rush of getting a pap er out a few items were missed which should have occasioned comment in last weeks issue we neglec ted to mention for instance that mayor joseph gib bons was a guest on the mayor of the town program the previous sunday an american radio show which stars lionel burrymore and is rebroadcast over a cana dian network we also failed to comment on the may 24th motorcycle race in the park which this year drew a much smallercrowd than usual it was discouraging to the grc which counts on revenue from this event for some of their activities- last year the grc netted over 400 while this year the net was about 50 an other item missed was an account of a banquet held in erin by the industrial bowling league to which on invi tation had been extended to us and which a planned trip kept us from attending also missing for those who loolc to the herald to tell them of fire calls wath mention that the fire brigade was called on monday at v supper time to a fire which broke out in a car owned by harvey lusty it all goes to show that it is hard for an editor to take a holiday and even harder to catch up when one comes home potpourri manager fred chapman of the bank of com merce draws a human interest story to our attention which lie thinks worthy of comment oil a windy day recently a little girl with a bundle of daily papers was proceeding along mill street when a gust of wind scat- teired her papers inajl directions a passing lady hel ped the teary youngster rescue what papers she cojuld then took her to a nearbydrug store- and bought extra papewi so she would have enough for advertised by macgormacks drug store o its a small world when crossingjhe border at windsor on a rccentvisit the american im- migration officer said he knew where georgetown waa and that a mrs ross from town had been visiting at the house next door lo his in detroit its still an noying to a canadian tourist that with the best bank ing system in tin- world the americans are so suspic ious of our money and discount it five or six percent reciprocity in this regard might bring more of the american dollars we want into canada when the am ericans visit this side of the border on main street vye notice a handsome new sign on centners drugs with fluorescent red lettering which stands out something like a neon sjgn charlotte mccullough has replaced gladys prouse in charge of the office at
