the georgetown herald wednesday june 22 1949 r rz m cjmaja r do you want a hard hitting and experienced member hughes cleaver j52j serveionr burlington high school board councillor reeve and mayor of town of burlington member house of commons 14 years chairman war expenditures committee chairman banking and commerce committee j r v one good term deserves another dont swap avoid a stalemate performance vote tor dear friends since 1935 i have had the honour of representing this riding at ottawa i enteredthework young enough in life that notwithstanding fourteen years of service i am still young enough to offer myself for re election at 56 years of age you will recall that when i first took office in 1935 times were very bad today the overalj picture so far as canada is concerned was never better 1 do not suggest that liberal government policies have been the only cause of the improvement but i know we will all agree that wise government policies help during my term of office 1 have sincerely tried to give you the type of representation at ottawa that you would like to have my services have always been available to all of my constituents irrespective of their party affiliations it is an open secret that the members of every political party differ in their views and that my position in the liberal party has been at the reform end of the group i have always staunchly supported social ser vice legislation and have had an active part in the introduction of the unemployment insurance measure the family allowances measure and the improvement of the old age pensions legislation holding views which 1 do it is needless for me to add that i will not be content until our old age pensions program is fully implemented and until our public health bill is implemented and until our unemployment insurance legis lation includes the added feature of savings at the present time many of our workers are paying unem ployment insurance who will never receive any benefits while 1 have seen the post office building at georgetowncompleted and new post offices built at both burlington and oakville since 1935 there are still three smaller communities in the riding entitled to public buildings under present conditions building of homes rrlust have precedence but i would like to hdve the op portunity of a further term of office in order to see that these three smaller communities do have the postal buildings to which they are entitled i would also like to have the opportunity of seeing low rental hous ing projects built for old age pensioners in every municipality in the riding similar to what we have in bur lington ipuring my term of office i have also succeeded in having permanent wharf structures built at both bronte and oakville to take the place of the old wooden structures which are so costly to maintain and i might add that at both bronte and oakville we now have inland harbours just as good as you will find anywhere on the great lakes in municipalities of comparable size in this campaign you are told that it is time for a change and that the present liberal administration is j old and tired i need not remind you that notwithstanding the very upset condition of the world at large can ada today is more prosperous than she has ever been before this i suggest did not come about by accident but by careful planning- colonel drew is pledged to fire these planners or bureaucrats as he calls them do you want this done as to the liberal administration being old and tired this of course often happens when a party has been in office for many years but it does not necessarily happen may i remind you that the only two cabinet ministers who have been in office since i became your representative are the rt hon c d howe and the rt hon j g gardiner both of whom are highly experienced and still in their prime all of the other members of the cabinet have been new appointments from time to time and five of them ate less than fifty years of age it has always been the policy of the liberal party to promote young men and re tire the old ones in addition we have thirteen new parliamentary assistants all young men who are beina trained for future appointments on june 27th do you want to exchange prosperity and experienced govern- ment for promises and inexperience i u yours sincerely hughes cleaver vote to reelect h lj g hes cle a v e r publlalmd hr to bshaa ubtnl jubmbsml 0 o liberal for halt on i i g iicimj s kicsmp
