weekly newspapers associations and the ontario quebec division of he cwna thceditors ccwrner voting day next monday the expression vote as yooye but vote rriay seem somewhat timeworn but it is still the best expression of our democratic system for choosing elec ted representatives to conduct this nations business at this time with elections in the air we should parti cularly count our blessings and realize that canada is one of the few countries in the world which is not run by one political machinewhich allows no free choice of candidates or party because we haye this blessing it every manaduty to cherish it and to add his mite to the grand total by casting a ballot next monday three parties seek office in canada and a candidate for each seeks office iryhalton we do not presume to tell any one whom we think they should vote for everyone has hod the chance to to listen in these candidates to read their advertisements in this newspaper and to form their own opiniona as to whom they consider to be the best person to represent halton at ottawa we do urge however that every qualified voter who is physically capable of getting to the polling booth should do so it would be a glorious thing if georgetown could boast that ninety or ninetyfive or even ninetynine per cent of eligible voters had cast their ballots and it is such an easy thing for each one of us to take five minutes to do so vote as you like but vote next monday glimpses of the obvious the english humour magazine punch we believe has popularized the phrase glimpses of the obvious to write an editorial on the water shortage seems to be just that for even the youngest schoolchild knows that we have had no rain in town since late march and that a water supply which is obtained from surface drainage is not inexhaustible however because the situation is serious a few more words in this column can do no harm an din case some of our readers have not noticed advertisements or signs posted around town a remin der is in order at present the use of garden hose is restricted to one hour daily from seven to eight in the evening how long this will last is entirely dependent on when and how much it rains continuation of the drought might quite possibly lead to complete curtail ment of this heavy rains might mean that the restric tions could be relaxed whichever way it goes the municipal council has supreme authority to deal with the matter and until further information comes from them the present restrictions apply x an important regulation is that if a fire should occur in town during the hour when hoses are in use these must be ut off immediately this is vitally nec essary in order to haye adequate water pressure for the fire hoses pot pourri it has been brought to our attention that in a news account last week about booster night in the park we neglected to say that president j l lambert of the lions club presented the new bandstand lo the town and mayor gibbons received it on behalf of the towns people mr lambert reviewed some of the past activi ties of the club and pointed out to those present the ben efit that a service club can bring to a community an addition is- being constructed at the rear of the mc- clure funeral home oi edith street which will be used as a garage and storage building another new busi- tiess in georgetown with the opening of anns hair- dressing in the former hill grocery store near the station the weatherjs even more than usual the subject of conversation these days and everyone is praying for rain to relieve the drought which is facing this section of ontario we hear of rain in acton bruce county in muskoka and otherpoints but all geor getown has had is a few drops which amount to no more than a heavy dew a full page spread in a toronto daily boasts that trinity college had a record of 85 per cent in exams at ghs we dont talk about ordinary marks like that last year for instance 875 per cent was registered in the finals perhaps many people like ourselves have been wondering what the extensive construction operations on property fronting no 7 highway near brampton junction are one lady thought it was a new airport it is the propetry of arm strong bros construction who last year sold their abc farms to a gentleman from south america and bought sfr2 to p in cue anyone won- oowmns club has special dispensation to wa- ji b of the restricted evening hour a y on n the propertylast year and die club not use water from die own supply for this put- local ttorescplease note a new gocart with r builtin canvas shopping bag is a big favourite in the states and would be a fast seller in town if they are ob tainable jn canada the gocarts are extremely light weight being made of aluminum and canvas and are just the thing for georgetowns hilly streets the little store across from the legidri was doing a land of fice business on saturday and there was almost a traf fic jam in late afternoon as thirsty georgetowners stocked up for the weekend and while on the sub ject there are rumours that an attempt will be made to establish u government liquor store in georgetown the idea is sensible for a town of this size should have this and it would be particularly beneficial to local bus inesstirms- requests to the provincial government for adr licence bureau here have met with little success cmtl this is another thing wjtich slioujd be urged it ts an imposition for georgetown pfeople to travel to smaller towns like etoyi every spring t get their lic- erice plates and driving licences snd it has a detrimental efefct- in taking business away from town it willbe interesting to see how the dog bylaw enforcement works out we have alwavs thought that people think as much and sometimes more of their dogs than they do of their children and we wouldnt take the job fora hundred dollars a dog the regulations however are extremely fair and anyone who cares fortheir dog hall ample time to claim him if he is picked up so there can be no complaints on that score page 6 v dirtfctorv dr j burns milne xray dental surgeon georgetown i phone bo dr reid clifford lds dxis uklslllm phone 410- opfln evenings loln
