and school board representatives and the north halton high school- district board with mr duffin of the depart ment of education once and for all speyside has been eliminated as a site for any central high school and in dications are that if and when the municipalities invol ved can decide on the building of such a school it will be in or close to georgetown the matter must offic ially rest until after the end of this year when- george town btecomes a member of the district efforts of the present north halton board to rush the building of a school in acton have fallen on deaf ears at the depart ment which believes that the largest municipality which isgeorgetown should havr an official voice in any page 8 each municipality has a beef s follows decision the high school situation is one of the most complex with which the department of education has had to deal embracing as it does three substantial cen tres of population yet with the two rural municipali ties providing the bulk of the financing whether the central board decides to build a school in georgetown acton silvercreek stewarttown or anywhere the last decision rests with the municipal councils who must back the debenture issue and if agreement cannot be reached there it reverts to the voters themselves who would be asked to vote on a debenture issue the least that can happen is that one school will be built acton needs this desperately and whether the present district is maintained or whether it- eventually breaks up acton must provide accommodation for her high schpol students the other two towns can if nec essary get by for a number of years though george town is badly lacking proper facilities and milton with an al building has indicated to the department that this is meant for a public school at present the most popular idea seems to be to leave the present milton school and build a second to jerve this part of the district in short term financing this might be thennost economical solution but at the same time it would defeat to some extent the purpose of high school districts which is to provide better and rhore variededucation th at present to complicat the issue still more is the belief of some officials includ- ing the auditor that the north halton municipalities have stretched their borrowing near the limit and that there is a danger that a large central school cannot be financed to sum up which we interpret as esquesing thinks they are paying too high a share of the costs favours a 2school area nassagaweya wants one central school preferably at speysidei but would settle for acton definitely opposed to georgetown as it is too far away acton wants one central school at speyside and is suspicious of georgetowns late entry into the area milton is fairly complacent about the whole thing because it is the only municipality which has anything approaching an uptodate school georgetown favours a oneschool area it does not seem that the matter will be solved in the immediate future and the most that can be ex pected for the next three years is that the district will operate as a 3school area some savings will be effec ted in transportation costs undoubtedly as there will be a better distribution of students among the three schools as long as three schools exist the board should give serious thought to the question of transporting teachers rather than students to teach special subjects for there is a possibility that it might be cheaper to equip three schools rather than shuttle students back and forth from one urban centre to another pot pourri ar example of efficient police work was shown last week when local police were asked to locate dom inion seed house proprietor w f bradley who was motoring on a business trip in the maritimes o inform him of the death of his sister eastern canada police were contacted and the information broadcast over police radio and commercial stations within a matter of a few hours an american motorist recognized mr bradleys car in new brunswick and relayed the de sired information enabling mr bradley to fly to geor- getown for the funeral efficiency of the toronto police was tested by the writer las week when he re ceived a speeding summons for driving 42 miles an hour along lakeshore drive they say two wrongs done make a right but we can imagine how popular a motorist would be along that busy thoroughfare if he rude rigidly to the 30 mile law several cases of mumps are keported in town among the children frank ttghe of the smith stone office staff has ob liged with a copy of the postelection bowmanville statesman which we mentioned last week the front page features a picture of johnm- james mp and in the opposite corner a picture of his uncle ond political opponent editor george james sitting moroanlv in de feat before a crepehung door the picture is captioned the mourrjingafter the leajeatttmrial is titled with neither gloom nor gloating anddotes an ex cellent job of afterelection cditorializina a touch of local interest in the bowmanville story is the fact that george james lived as a youth in glen williams where his lather owned the lidusc now occupied by mrs arnibtroiig on the glen road two doors this way from prwstons- service station the editors routine was considerably upset last week by three trips to tpr- onto necessitated when theycfunget- member of
