the lions club 1 he camp was enormously successful not only with the children themselves but with ther parents who appre ciated the idea of providing constructive training and recreation for their children during the summer months one man is even reported to have had to change his own vacation so as not to conflict with his child attend ing the daily camp which in itself is an indication that it was worthwhile lion don barragei and his boys and girls committee were in charge of the work for the club with such an auspicious start it is certain that next summer another stayathome camp will be pro vided experience in other centres has shown that a twoweek period in july is the ideal time any longer period bringing a drop in interest both in those attend ing and those in charge young georgetown will be looking forward to the second session lets have a swimming pool from time to time we remark on the lack of good swimming facilities in an otherwise uptodate town and wish that something could be done about it an other summer has gone by and still no action has been taken the lions club last spring had an idea of mak- ing anatural pool at the john street bridge by damming the creek at that point but had to drop the plan when they were advised by an engineer that it was im practical and that enough depth could not be obtained by a dam later of course when it was found that the new sewerage system would not take the mill waste the plan would have been vetoed by this for the time being s we still think that georgetown is in a position to build a pool with the proper cooperation from the pub lic but we think too that it is too big a job for any one service club to tackle the initial expenditure would be somewhere between fifteen and thirty thousand dol lars and there is considerable yearly upkeep which must be provided as well there is only one way which could assure a successful conclusion and that is for a group of public organizations such as the lions iode rebekahs womens institute legion etc to band to gether form a working committee pledge themselves aa organizations to certain financial commitments and tart a public canvas for funds to build the pool it is not a job which can be done in adav or a month but the longer we sit back and do nothing the longer a good town is denied the advantage of a proper swim ming pool and the benefits which it could bring our children we should jike to see a local organization provide the spark which is necessary by contacting other similar groups in an effort to get the ball rolling merchants should keep together it is encouraging to see that some cooperation is being exhibited in the newlyformed retail merchants association and it is to be hoped that the association will keep going and not disintegrate as it has in the past everyone benefits by an active organization for not onlydo the individual members reap their own benefits but the public is provided with better and better stores a wider range of merchandise and cheaper prices which mass selling can bring during the war years george town merchants became a pretty smug lot they were doing all the business they could handle it was impos sible to obtain adequate help and many of them thought that an association was a waste of time things have changed anclthe time has come to examine the market and to try to induce local people to shop at home as well aa encourage more district people to come here for their hopping the promotion of a liquor store and the placing of signs indicating the shopping district aw only the start of
