includes georgetown look preltrttlnary action this week on escruesjngs request for an investigation into the sharing of school costs it is the townships conten tion that alnjost50 per cent of bohoblcosta are paid by them yet the student enrolment is about 35 per cent and they do not feel that the sharing of costs on an assessment basis is quite fair if transportation is not included in cost figures it would seem that esquesing has some grounds for protest considering transporta tion costs separately on the other hand this could be looked upon as being the sole responsibility of the two rural municipalities in the area as it is only they who benefit by this we mean the cost of getting students to school originally there is extra- cost of course for a shuttle service which takes students from one school i- c i i c i i h i i to another forspecialaubjects which shjsulid be sharecj by all the question of cost is an important one and we cannot blame the two townships for their concern over the greatly increased cost of education what can be done about it is the problem as long as the district contains three schools ihe onlyplace where- any sub stantial sum of money can be saved is in transportation either by a sharp revision in milps travelled or in aban- doning one big advantage which originally appealed to rural people making education more readily avail able to country students by eliminating their problem of getting to a town school the larger solution may lie in one central sphool which was the original purpose of the coming-into- being of the district it is certainty the duty of the board to investigate fully the costs of a new building and com pare these with costs of operating under the present ystem unless a new building can be operated much cheaper than the present three there is as we have pointed out only one way to cut costs and that is by revising transportation we have a hobrjy we always declared that a newspaperman had no other hobby than his business because he had no time for anything else now we find that because of a chain of events we haveacquired one it started last year when mrs william carney brought us an old post card of main street taken many years ago- before pavements and when the present readys store had an overhead sidewalk covering extending to the street later on jack armstrong presented iis with another old post card which is at least 35 years old which reveals old town history with which most of the newer residents are unfamiliar it depicts wilbur park lakewhich took in the creek flats street toward mcnab street where is the hobby right there in those three pictures they will formthe nucleus of whatwe hope may eventually become a valuable pictorial record of georgetown and district history it is our intention to collectany such pictures showing old buildings or scen- ry find as much data as can be established and mount them in a suitable book with a written description thererrrust be dozens of such pictures tucked away in atticsor in family albums which could contribute to the collection afamily picture- may have been taken be fore a background which reveals some early history other postcards may be available showing local or dis trict scenes we ask that readers help us by contribu ting anything which they consider of interest to the pic- v turc history of georgetown j potpourri we missecpthe biggest story of thefweek when we failed to report that georgetown almost had a bank robbery a week ago saturday the two men who were arrested after robbing jn elmira bank discudsed the possibility op choosing georgetown as they drove from the cily in a commandeered taxi cab but changed their minds when a provincial police car passed them near town the robbery would have come at the same time as the cleave barn fire had they not changed their minds bert raymond who livesjust outsidctown limits on lower main street has been hired by the hydro to rend meters an ice storm monday night tied up traffic in town and made it almost impossible to drive to either the glen or stewarttown untipt sanding trucks got out we wonder just when a mar ooned pedestrian who was draped around the stop sign by the bank washable to manoeuvre himself home wards at this time of year we wonder why any city people rould think a small town is dead every night
