half of the canadian champion plowmen and myself i want to say hello everybody for we ore bock home we flew back to canada from prostwlck scotland it was a smooth trip and a fast one for we had a tall wind all the way we were surprised when we put down at dorval airport to learn we were two hours ahead of sche- dule jthat gave us time to tele phone our homes so that when we landed at malton a few hours later our families were on hand to give us a real welcome this business of gi6btftrotting can certainly be thrilling but com ing home is just as thrilling that poem by walter scott that we had to memorize at school describes our feelings when vie landed better ilihon we can express them brelbev there the man witkeoul apdead v who never to himself hstiiastd this is rhy oiatv my native andl attended the in ternational plowing match at mul- lusk near belfast id just like to say in passing that jim eccles effort there was- really outstand ing taking eighth place in a field of 38 champion plowmen from the uniled kingdom was really an achievement especially ashe had only one days practice on the high- cut plow there were some there who said he should have rated higher but be that as it may the fact is that jim is the first cana dian plowman to do so well in a special class or overseas plowmen jim also took first and ron mar quis was second against very stiff euorpean competition the boys purebred shbrthorn sales at perth visited a numbef of outstanding farms and oven attended a football match at glasgow our guides in the land of ffiotieatherjjvsre allen campbell of the department of agriculture scotland and ken mcneil of anglo american oil co they certainly did a good job of loolflng aftertheir chsrgee its hard to know where to start in describing our experiences but as we have al ways wanted to at- tend ihe terth sale 111 start there theperth soles were hold ln largo building specially fitted up for the occasion it was a twoh jlisjaf air with oie fifing jaylor show and the second- day- for sales the jiublltyj of cattle offevedn was jvery high but is fartts exhibiting tho cottlc i think maybe awe dp the job better herein canada- there were soma outslonding bulls up for- solo and the bidding was brisk somehow we got thor impression that the british breeders liked to soy that a bull cost them so many guineas and for that reason they seemed willing to carry their bids higher than cana dian bidders would go the top price paid at this years sales was 6000 guineas or about 21nnn this was for a white bull i j named lawton nelson the major champion and grand reserve cham pion it was consigned by major p h henderson and was bought iy argentine interests fourteen i animals from the cdlrossic fjirms owned by capl john macgulivroy sold for a total of 32000 guineas jusl about everybody who is in terested in purebred shorthornj attends the perth sales but we were surprised to learn that the english actress grcpr gorton had been there although we didnt the georgetown herah arvedneadhy march 8 1950 1 i i i i m gqo3 ptace to buy iii im h5 tv m were a credit to all canadian plow men also in passing id like to point out that when i apeak of we in these letter i mean the three is us there is my next door neigh bour jim eccles of brampton and ron marquis of sunderland the canadian champion plowmen as winners of the euo transatlan tic horse and tractor plowing clas ses at last years international plowing match held near brant- ford these boys were awarded trips to the united kingdom with im perial oil ltd paying the expen ses as n i director of the ontario plowmens association sponsor of the intprnationnl plowing match i l we did however see the v foundation herd miss g arson bought through an agent it ww made up of five females and two bulls they were fill white and were bought for between 150 and 250 gulneu apiece we understood they were for a cattle ranch miss garson ft starting in new mexico we also heard some of the fast est bidding weve ever heard- in one period they auctioned off w head of cattle in 110 minutes which ic certainly a lot faster than we do in our country all in all it was easy to understand why the perth sales have oyer many years con- sisumtly secured the highest prices for shorthorn bulls in the english- limited phone 161 guelph and queen streets h vammmumkbbmmasauiammaatmsrahbh0 astengo was buying some pure bred s for his ranch in south amer ica it was in edinburgh that we saw winston churchill he was making a political speech there that night but because of other engagements we ud not t te hear him he was staying at to same hotel as we were and when we got back that night he came in a few minutes after we got a real good closeup look at him be la just as impressive in the flesh as he is in his pictures several peo ple were after him for autographs but it wasnt us because we didnt have autograph books with us the day we attended the football match was a miserable day it was snowing the match was between glasgow ranger and couperheath and it was played in more than on inch of snow in spite of the dirty j weather there was a good crowd on hmd to sec the rangers win eight to nothing compared with our i game it was rather tame they 1 1lay n i j more gentlemanly game was appointed to accompany the s world over there and body checking is boys as coachmanager i also act the perth sale also served to re- onalized as asort orreportcrhlstorian mind me that its a small world in scotland we were treated roy for it was there that i ran into my ally and really got around while there we saw some of the finest livestock farms of all we have seen we also saw winston chur chill attended the worldfamous next door neighbour hector as tengo of rosafe fiirms brampton i hadnt seen him since about the lime of we had before we left we visited the farm of william young sherrlton not far from prestwick mr young is a cousin of clark young of the ontario plowmens association the royal winter sort out our memories as time goes on we may have other oppor tunities to tell you of the thing that havent been covered in thaaa letters but before i bring my final letter to a close there are tsro mat ters id like to mention the first concerns the maple trees we planted or left to be plan ted overseas as a symbol of cana dian friendship the danish gov ernment has reciprocated sine we returned we have received a shipment of beeches the basest is the national tree of denmark they have asked that the trees be plan ted on the grounds of the ontario agricultural college at guelph as you may remember from my last letter i planted maple trees at the veterinary college at copenhagen i think this reciprocity is a real friendly gesture on the part of the danish government and i hope wp can make a ceremony of plantlnlf the beeches i also hope that ss many as can make it will attend the ceremony the other important matter to our thanks to the ontario plow mens association and imperial oil ltd for making the trip possible we would also like to express our appreciation- to the many people to private industries in the govern ment services and the esso com panies overseas for all thay did
