down there can be no juatificatipnjeor councikatrilcing stax rate and then revising an estimate the time- for debate is before the budget is adopted and council cannot conscientious ly deviate from this if they tire to do a proper job there are times of course when additions to the budgethave to be made because of emergencies or changed conditions- if these are substantial however a debenture issue is often used rather than paying out of current revenue and it is seldom that any council has a substantial deficit pt the year end while the grant for grc this year will remain at 400 it is to be hoped that the officials of that organi zation will carry on with what resources they have and continue the program which last year proved so suc cessful individual councillors have offered to assist in a campaign f6r funds and there is no reason that an organized campaign cannot raise any reasonable quan tity of funds for furtherance of a rareation program it is fortunate that grc has capable executive leader ship along with the services of a parttime director who is a past master at organization this year should see the prograjn bearing full fruit and any major changes in personnel would hamper its aims finalists again as expected theraidersjiad littlejxoublelqubting lakefield from the intermediate b hockey playoffs and now will meet sundridge for the championship- it -is- quite a record which georgetown has rung up on hockey competition these past three years this will be the third straight year that the raiders have been finalists they won the championship in 1 948 lost out to sundridge last year in a hardfought series and now once again are on the threshold of a champion ship despite poor attendance all season it is expected that the playoffs will bring the full houses which the hockey club executive have been h for this time we can be assured that the scores will not be lopsided and there should be plenty of excitement when two top teams meet with the championship at stake merchants should be considered it is to be hoped that the request to council by the retail merchants association for a revision in parking regulations will not be ignored merchants are in the best position to judge public opinion concerning this and the complaints have been many georgetown has always lacked adequate parking facilities and the prob lem is enhanced when twenty or more spaces are cut out the restoration of angle parking on main street except for one side of the bloclc from the mcgibbon house to georgetown dairy should solve the conges tion problem caused by gray coach bus traffic as the buses turn at the main corner angle parking with a oneway street on mill will create additional parking paces with no danger of traffic jams we would suggest a one month experment for the merchants plan potpourri it is particularly timely that the roxy theatre has a march of time feature the fight for better schools on its program next week georgetown at present is faced with the problem of providing more public school accommodation and better high school facilities have been needed here for years the picture should give some useful information on the subject nice to know that former georgetowners think of us some- tune and we were pleased to receive a copy of the amarillo texas times sent by doug greer en route to his new home in california and a copy of the yuma arizona daily sun from frank tighe who moved fne recently both men are former smith and ston- jllm frank binnie of lindsay writes that she is visiting for a time in parry sound and is
