new public schoor the facto came to light at council meeting when it vmi pointed out that tyitt 13000 in debentures for the old waterworks system and wartime housing would be completely retired by the time a similar amount of school debentures are issued in fact there will be some decrease onthis score inas much as the provincial grant will amount to 34 per cent of this figure this should be the clinching pointy in assuring a favourable vote on june 1 9th coupled as it is with the fact that if a new school is not built there will be no government grant on any expenditures made to provide temporary classrooms if such have to be provided there is one point which we have heard mention ed which should be put straight taxpayers have been heard to say there wpnt be any tax rise because of the bonds but what aboujmthe extra teachers neftded well- it is a fact that more teachers will be employed which means more money paid out in salaries but this is a fixedexpense and whether our children are taught in suitable classrooms in temporary quarters or in joe mcgurk 8 barn the same number of teachers will still have to be employed a compensating factor is that there is a government grant on per capita attendance and as enrolment increases more money will be avail able from this source adding it up we can recommend nothing which would be better physicajly or financially- than a new school building we hope enough voters feel the same on june 19th new parking system pleasing vce think georgetown has the perfect parking system on main street now the angle lines have been painted on the west side and paralleljnarkings on the east side it provides accommodation for several more cars and still keeps the street wide enough for traffic to move freely as well as giving the appearance of a wider street than it did when there was angle park ing on both sides parking has been an increasing headache with town councils of the past few yearsand we do not envy these gentlemen in having to rrxfke decisions on the question georgetown is gtowing and has a much smal ler main street thati towns of similar size it is imper ative that as many cars as possible be allowed to park on the street without affecting traffic control merch ants themselves are often offenders and have been ask ed to keep their own cars off the street as much as pos sible every citizen can help if he wijl use main street only when shopping and park on one of the side streets when he is downtown for other purposes i pot pourri a reader tells us that the deacon referred to in the poem published last week from an old herald was mr e search who in the i890s was town constable assessor tax collector and road malt in the days when a town employee had a multitude of duties father duff was a minister of the congregational church reading the guelph mercury we note that miss isabella preston is credited with developing variants of crown imperial lilies while she was on the staff of the oac at guelph miss preston is author of the book garden lilies published n 1930 we do note an error when the item continues according to acquaintances of mips preston in guelph she now lives in retirement in england having gone there following her superannua tion as a member of the staff of the central experi mental farm at ottawa we can tell the writer that heis much closer to homb than that having purchased the old fraser home on market street in georgetown where she now lives with the june 19th money by law vote for a new public school it is interesting to recall that the last such vote took place about twelve years ago on the question of a 50000 addition to the high school and was defeated by 20 votes lets hope that history doesnt repeat itself in this case sorry to see that publisher arloff dills of acton is in hospital and hope hewill soo be b to work egyptian princess will follow her 3yearold bridegroom any where says an item in the globe fit mail what chance would the poor
