agricultural college the early part of last week is always a high light for rural young people we understand that memoral hall at the college could not accommodate the huge gathering of eleven hundred for their church service halton delegates all report a splendid pro gramme one of the annual high lights is always the election of their executive officers during the life of the junior farmers association of ontario a number of top flight young people have served s presi dent jack cockbufn of drumbo who turned over the reins of office last week to miss fcleanor saraeuse the new president from- norfolk county is an outstanding example it will be of particular interest to all of our readers to learn that dav id pelletterio president of- lfalton junior farmers was elected as the first vice president of the provincial organization in short under nor mal circumstances dave should be the provincial president in 1952 it is no small honour to be elected to the executive committee of any pro vincial organization and certainly the junior farmers association of ontario is recognized today as one of the leading rural organizations of this province it will be recalled that dave was one of the four jun ior farmers who represented on tario in great britain in 1950 while perhaps the youngest in years of anyone yet selected for this high of fice he has had- a noteworthy- eareer in junior farmer activities for several years he was a top contest ant incalf club work in this coun ty in 1947 he and henk devries of georgetown represented the mil ton holstein calf club in the prov incial interclub competitions ana won the provincial championship and later represented this province in the dominion or interprovincial contest at the royal winter fair the same year dave was also a member of the 1949 team representing halton in the intercounty live stock judg ing competition at the hoyal where he was awarded the gold medal for the high contestant in judging dairy cattle he is the immediate past president of palermo junior far mers and at the present time is one of the three supervisors encaged in diairy herd improvement work in hiilton county his election as vice president of the junior farmers association of ontario is indeed a well deserved tribute and reflects considerable nouour to his home- county and in particular to the junior farmers of halton who are recognized as one of the most active groups in the province notice to creditors rjf the estate of margaret jane mecoil widow deceased allpersons having claims against the estate of margaret jane mccoll late of the pasturing reduces new seeding visor experimental stations have always advised against any intensive pas turing of new seedings the first fall or as a matter of fact against pas turing any meadow too closely par ticularly during the month of sep tember when the grasses and clov ers are storing up food supplies for the winter almost every practical farmer will agree that this is sound advice but in recent years in hal ton due to poor seed catches and lack of adequate moisture at ahe critical growing period a great many farmers have found it necea- gary to p a that was available during the past week we had the effect of pasturing new seedings in the fall brought to our attention by one of our prominent halton farmers like many others he was short of pasture last fall and consequently his dairy herd from september on had the run of sev- eral stubble fields which had been seeded in order to protect his bush lot he put up a lemporay woven wire fence boross the field adjoin ing the bush in other words the cattle had the run of part of the lield only there is still a good stand in both sections of the field but there ts an almost unbelievable dif- ference in the vigor and growth of the two sections tlie grass and clover seeds had been sown through the gruin box with the grain and consequently the new seeds are in rows in the section of the field which was pastured the young seed hngs are suu there but thejfe had been little or no growth when we were thee test week on the other hand righf through the temporary fence where there has been no pas turing the grasses and clovers were almost- filling inbetween the drills it is going to be interesting to watch these two sections of the same field during the next six weeks to see if this difference persists right up to midjune
