in 1m is one of the pro jects promoted by the halum con servation committee which has put halton county on the map as one of the few coun to ontario attempt ing to carry on an active conserva tion programme the beaver have definitely proven that when it comes to conserving water they are la a class to themselves unfortunately they do not always build thejr dams at sites which human beings might select in short their engineering ability is unsurpassed but they do not worry themselves about flooded roads a year ago they flooded one of nassagaweya tosgnship roads which runs nearby the township council raised the road a good twen ty inches and all went well until this spring when the industry of the beaver coupled with the excessive spring rain flood the road again as a result the nassagaweya coun cil requested the department of lands and forests to either provide financial assistance to raise the road oi to remove the beaver denartmental officers immediate ly proceeded to remove the beaver by live trapping only one was re moved but what a storm of prote went up over the county keeve george cume chairman of the hal- ton conservation committee im mediately called his committee to gether and what a meeting it turn ed out to be it was the largest at tended meeting of any yet held by the committee strange as it may seem no one present wanted the beaver removed not even the mem bers of the nassagawaye township council they did feel however that nas- sagaweya township should not be solely responsible for further expen ditures on the road in question with this everyone else at the meeting was in agreement conservation ot water is an important matter in this county and in particular in the two lower townships where already it has been necessary to build at least 100 farm ponds every year in this county a large number of far mers find it necessary to haul or buy water and it is not only most inconvenient but very expensive consequently it was the recom mendation of the conservation com mittee o the committee on agric- urture and reforestation of the hal- ton county council that jhalton county reimburse nassagaweya township for any further expendi tures on the road in question which are necessary as a result of further flooding by the beaver kopresenta- tives of tin dcpt of lands forests who were present assured the meet ing that no further beaver would be removed in short an armistice has been signed and while some de tails have still to be worked out it would definitely seem that the battle of beaver dam u over and the beaver will be allowed to carry on their wonderful engineering pro jects and create bodics of water which will help to replenish some of halton s failing springs and wells fastm news csdf siswl grain c1w organized
