of the halton county wealth unit very ably addressed the gathering his topic was health and wenare in rural ontario by exenvplnica- tion the speaker made mention of the variety of meanings embodied in the word health to the diverse nations of the world in 1851 when mans life expectancy was 41 years the medical officer of health was concerned chiefly with problems of communicable disease in epidemic proportion his concern then did not embrace problems of housing and mental health but through con tinued efforts and increased medical knowledge baby hoys born today have a life expectancy of 61 years and their sisters two years more epidemics of the most serious com municable diseases are almost un heard of and infant deaths have been drastically reduced the practice of pubic health to day depends on conrinucd vigilance environmental i actors such as san itation and housing are now a ma jor item of concern but considered as important as theso in todays larger meaning of the word health are the social aspects of physical illness no tuberculosis patient enters the sanilorium neither does a person reach old age that the social side docs not almost over shadow the physical condition health is being cared for in rural as well as urban communities by the health units but there is a sad lack of trained and organized groups in rural areas to deal with such soc ial problems as that of old age
